<p>Regardless of our personal value judgements about graduate education, does high PhD production tell us something about the quality of undergraduate departments. If it doesn’t, what’s a better indicator? It’s pretty uncontroversial to claim that Stanford has an excellent CS department or Chicago is great for economics. How do we evaluate a claim that Beloit is excellent for anthropology or Bryn Mawr for Classics?</p>
