I changed your list slightly by placing UCSD higher; I don't think we can say that the LAC's (Pomona and Harvey Mudd) have any reputation; 99% of the country has never heard of them. Secondly, you can't really compare their academics with a research university; both types run differently.

i dont think that caltech would be over Stanford and Berkeley. Caltech is way too specialized for most of the country to know about it.

That's a good point, irock1ce. I was thinking about that when I was typing my explanation for not including the 2 LACs...

yea stanford is the most prestigious university in california. caltech is definetely on par with it academically, but not reputation-wise.

i would say caltech's reputation isnt as widespread as stanford, but for those who know both of the schools well, i would have to say that the reputation of both schools are about the same and both are highly respected.

as far as reputation goes, USC should also be on the list, around where UCSD ranks.

Bubbles placed pomona 6th on the academic ranking. im curious to know why and what other people think about pomona, because im having trouble ranking it myself.

Academically:

1-Caltech
2-Stanford
3-Berkeley
4-UCLA
5-Harvey Mudd
6-Ponoma
7-USC
8-UCSD
9-Claremont McKenna
10- Santa Clara University

How can you say that Caltech is better than Stanford academically when Stanford's engineering programs and humanities are better? The sciences aren't that far behind either. Is MIT academically better than Harvard? I don't think you can make these sort of comparisons with apples and oranges.

USC is extremely overrated at academics - this has been discussed on many occassions on other threads; UCSD should be at #7 on bern700's list.

Academically:

Stanford

Caltech

Berkeley

UCLA

Harvey Mudd

Pomona

USC

UCSD

I would NOT rank USC above UCSD. I would rank Cal Tech above Stanford. And, for undergraduate education, I think I would also rank both Pomona and Harvey Mudd above UCLA and UCB. No flames, please - I just think these two schools provide a better education for undergraduates, based on their 4-year graduation rates, percentages going on to grad school, and other factors.

So my academic rankings:

Cal Tech

Stanford

Pomona

Harvey Mudd

UCBerkeley

UCLA

UCSD

Claremont Mckenna

Occidental

USC

Academic
1. Pomona
2. Stanford
3. Harvey Mudd
4. Caltech
5. UC Berkeley
6. Claremont McKenna
7. UCLA
8. Occidental
9. UCSD

Reputation
1. Stanford
2. Caltech
3. UC Berkeley
4. USC
5. UCLA
6. Pomona
7. UCSD
8. UC Davis
9. Cal Poly SLO

Party Reputation
1. Chico State
2. SDSU
3. UCSB
4. UCSC

You guys are wrong concerning Caltech's reputation and I'll tell you why. Caltech is a school (like MIT) that has had it's reputation based on the fact that it's full of super-geniuses. Think about it - if someone were to say that they were going to Caltech, everyone would automatically assume that they were supersmart (which may not be a bad assumption). That's reputation right there, even more so than Stanford in my opinion. When you've had a movie starring Val Kilmer made about you, I don't think anyone can say you are not well known.

Geniuses yes but in a very narrow way. Not many writers, artists, or even top business people seem to come from Cal Tech. NASA and Boeing yes but not the Fortune 500.

lol harvey mudd is definitely not as good as all of you are placing it.

should just be stanford/caltech/cal/ucla/pomona

Stanford is academically super in all areas. Sure Caltech might have an edge in pure science, but Stanford has an edge over Caltech in engineering and the humanities. Whereas one can make the argument that Caltech's humanties programs really suck, nobody can frown upon Stanford's pure science programs especially since we have the linear accelerator. Stanford's academics beat out Caltech's, and this is reflected in the peer assessment score in US News. I would even make the argument that Caltech isn't academically superior to Berkeley, which has top notch grad programs and is stellar in all areas as well.

i agree, USC is overrated academically. how can it miraculously jump from #42 to #30 on the USNWR rankings in 5 years? did it get a massive faculty overhaul or something? oh wait... USNWR doesnt measure the academic quality of undergrad education! also, those who come from california high schools know that the better kids matriculate at UCSD than USC, unless they were given lucrative scholarships by USC. finally, whoever ranked USC over UCLA and Pomona, you've got to be kidding right?

My thoughts about Caltech: it doesn't get the respect that it deserves. I would like to see if you guys can get into caltech in the first place (if you say "well i wouldnt want to go to caltech, then you're underrating it based on personal values-- that you aren't a big fan of science/math). The students that go there are very, very bright and although I think the faculty isn't the best, it is still very talented. Just because people haven't heard of Caltech doesn't mean that it shouldn't get put down or not respected; Amherst and Williams aren't well known either, but we (should) respect them.

I see Santa Clara and Occidental one a couple lists. How good are they/what are they known for?

"finally, whoever ranked USC over UCLA and Pomona, you've got to be kidding right?"

no. i ranked usc ahead only reputation-wise. the usc name carries a lot of weight.

i know here on CC, we're more in the academic circles than not and we regard cal poly SLO as the top cal state. however, i do think that the majority of cal state students/graduates wouldn't be able to name the top cal state, and they generally regard most of the cal states to be about the same level; there isn't a tier where so-and-so cal state is better than others. cal poly SLO's reputation isnt as widespread as we think it is.

"no. i ranked usc ahead only reputation-wise. the usc name carries a lot of weight."

okay ill give you that one. although i was thinking academic reputation by your list, since caltech was being ranked so high. if it was reputation by the average citizen, caltech would be below USC. but i guess its arguable whether or not USC has a bigger reputation than UCLA (i personally disagree).
