The Townhouses...hugh?

So I'm assigned to a townhouse. How are they (socially, amenities-wise,
etc)? I'd appreciate anyone's thoughts. I'm not sure I'm so happy.

Personally, I thought townhouses were only for the people that specifically requested them or upper-classmen, but thats cool I guess?!?

They're freshmen-only, there's 4 kids in 2 doubles. For the 4 of you, you get a bathroom and shower, living room, dining room, kitchen.

I lived in them last year. They are... AMAZING.

Socially they're isolated from the other dorms, but there is never that much inter-dorm interaction based on proximity. You have a great setup in which to chill with the friends you make.

It's essentially like having your own apartment. 4 students in 2 doubles. You get 2 stories, a full kitchen and dining area, living room, the works.

Townhouses are, in general, for those who request them, but not for upperclassmen--freshmen only, just like the other north campus dorms. You will have a great time.

my girlfriend was in a townhouse last year. They are the sweetest!

I can't find a good description of Comm/Activity Center at Townhouses. What is it like? Is it used?

The activity center is a little overhyped. If someone in your townhouse has a TV you probably won't use it except to get your mail or borrow a movie. (If you live in Townhouse A or B, you'll probably do your laundry there too; otherwise there will be a closer laundry center.)

My townhouse was great. I wouldn't have traded it for anything. You have more space than you could fill if you tried (I stored my bike inside for the entire winter and almost forgot it was there), a kitchen, a level of privacy between the four of you that's almost ridiculous, and great location for busing. (GREAT location for busing.) Yeah... be excited.

One of my good friends had a townhouse and we pregamed there all the time. It was really nice not having to squeeze us all into a dorm, since townhouses have living rooms that are fairly big. You have a nice little table in the living room, which happens to be perfect for beer pong. The doubles in the townhouses are small, however.

i highly suggest getting a movie subscription to the townhouse community center. It's only like $30 at most for the year and you can take out two movies at a time. My girlfriend and I utilized this alot.

People I know who paid for the movie subscription never used it. Why would you need that, when you have DC++?

yeah i paid for it and never, ever used it. walk to the townhouses for 10 minutes, or go online for 10 minutes...which do you think i picked?

i usually picked the legal method.

it's totally legal to sample someone else's files...actually using them is another story! ;)

My daughter was in a townhouse last year. When she found out ,she thought she would be isolated from the rest of North campus. Turned out they were great. No detriment to socializing, in fact due to large size, often the place for parties on North campus. Distance to other parts of North campus is greatly exaggerated and is a non-issue.

I am parent of incoming freshman and have some maybe stupid questions:

I assume that unlike other dorms, the students clean their own bathrooms, apartments. Is that right?

Where are the clothes washing machines?

Are they air conditioned or do they need fans?

What is available at the Townhouse Community Center. I can find out almost nothing about it?

Any other info about Townhouses and its community would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Cleaning service comes in once a week and cleans the bathrooms. You must clean your own room.

Washing mashines are located in rooms at the end of each quad (you could never live more than 100 feet from them), and also in the Community Center.

Air conditioning. You can even change the settings yourself.

THCC is mail, a common room with a large TV and piano, a study room, vending machines, washing mashines.

The Townhouses are great.

Yeah, something to keep in mind is that the Townhouses don't really need a community center since they're only a couple hundred feet from Robert Purcell Community Center, which is bigger and better in almost every way.

I'd still recommend getting a fan for sleeping the first month or two though. Also, I paid the activity fee and I did use the movie "rental" thing at least a couple times a month. It's probably different when you don't have a roommate who decided to buy his own TV though.

the townhouses are quite close to all of the other dorms, dont worry about being "disconnected" from the rest of north campus. If I had to pick a place to live, it'd def. be the townhouses.

Ditto re all the positive townhouse comments.

Thanks for all of the feedback. I, personally, feel a whole lot better about the townhouses now. I can't wait to be at Cornell!!
