Is this "off-campus?" How far away are classes (I'll be a business major)? Do a lot of freshman live there? Is it better to live in an honors dorm or somewhere closer to campus?

Don’t know much about it, but it is off campus. I’d say it’s a pretty long walk to classes. I think there might be buses?? Not really sure. You should probably live on campus your first year just to experience the “college” part of life as a freshman.

My son lived in the Traditions this year and has already signed a lease to live there again next year. It is off campus. It is a mix between a dorm and an apartment. It is located just one block off of campus. They are conveniently located and no bus is necessary.

I know it’s a block off campus, but is it close to where I’ll be going to classes-like Mays and wherever else I have to go to class?

It is probably as close as any place to the west campus and Mays. Much closer than many of the dorms.

We were there a few weeks ago. The rooms are SO nice and the group-areas are even better. I couldn’t talk my son into it tho. He wants to be “on-campus” also - even tho Tradition is probably closer to his classes than his dorm will be.

They DID show us the bus stop and say they come very often, but said most people just ride bikes.

The demo room is nice but once you see the a real room they give you its not so nice.
The sink was rusting, the cabinet on top of the sink area was really old and needed to be changed. The shower water has no force and got cold quickly. Food gets boring, staff are rude…

I have heard it is located near train tracks…
and also it is located at Northgate which is where many bars and clubs are located (kind of like 6th street in Austin)…
so getting good sleep or trying to study might be a little hard…

Callaway is by the train tracks I think. Is Callaway pretty much the same thing except its south of Tradition? Is Mays far from Callaway? If you’re in Calloway, do you need a car?

there are three off campus dorms that i know about.

callaway - near the rec and kyle field
tradition - northgate
cambridge - farther away closer to sorority houses

toured #2 and #3. preferred #3 to #2.

i would imagine that you could get by at any of these without a car by using shuttle buses.

plus, most people will probably have cars, so getting rides with people to the store or what have you shouldn’t be that hard.

Callaway and Tradition look so much nicer than the other dorms, but I do want to meet a lot of people and have a good social life. I don’t know what to do.

Traditions has been consistently able to provide both our children with exceptional resources in a dorm experience. The supportive and friendly atmosphere of the staff made their first year go really smooth. They were always upbeat and ready to help at any time. Their facilities and resources beat out anything you can find on campus. The common spaces available from their private study rooms, access to tutoring and working out in a great gym were key in making their first year at Texas A&M successful. Our kids were involved in many organizations at TAMU and Traditions made it the easy choice for the place to hold meetings and get organized in a great atmosphere.

It is about 75% freshman. It is a 5 min bike ride to the center of campus.

Ummmm…the CAMPUS is right by tue train tracks…so…

Callaway and Tradition are both nice and on opposite sides of campus. Tradition is closer to Northgate so if you plan on going out more Tradition would be the better place. I had an ex live there and it was really nice. There were often some athletes that lived there and you can meet a whole lot of people there. That being said, if you are concerned about being close to Wehner, Callaway would probably be just a tad bit closer. And by tad bit closer I mean maybe a difference of 25-50 feet or so. If you are an incoming freshman, though, I wouldn’t be concerned too much about being close to Wehner because most of your classes will be on main campus for a while.

The Traditions is a nice place to live. It is one block off campus and the bus stops next to the public garage next door. It drops you off in front of the MSC and you hop a bus to West Campus/Mays but as a freshmen most of your classes will be across the street from the traditions. The Callaway House is closer to West campus if you don’t want to take the bus. I’ve heard the Callaway house is mostly fraternity/sorority if that is your thing.

She settled on the traditions because they offer the meal plan (which is great by the way) and the kitchen as an option for occasional cooking. The deal maker was the onsite tutoring that is included at the traditions. It is in the party district but you get to choose which end of the complex to live which allows you to get further away from the noise. They also have a lot of events like game viewings in the theater, pool-side events, casino night, etc. You can see the list of events on their website. It costs about the same as the on-campus dorms and offers a lot of activities that you won’t get on campus.
