The type of math student.....

so maybe some of you have gotten to know me by now...i posted a few math threads with math IQ test links...but i have a question

i read on here people talkin about the SAT I math, the subject tests...and AMC 12 / AIME / USAMO...

back in HS...i got 800 on SAT I math with some prep to get rid of careless errors...770 on SAT II Math IC, and then a pretty low 700 on Math IIC (just low bc i know the curve is rather generous on that)...

on the AMC 12, i got the highest in my grade at 98.5 (i answered one incorrectly...if i'd just left it blank, i would've gotten a 101, and qualified for AIME...this was back in 2004)

nowadays (i'm 24), i do some of the AIME problems for fun...i've gotten up to 7 of them correct off one exam (i think the 1988 one on the AoPS website)...and i can usually stump my friends who made AIME before...and just to make it clear...i WASN'T a math major in college...i did electrical engineering...i took math thru diff eq and multivar calc (none of which apply to these types of problems)

just a rant really...bugs me to death that i didn't make AIME back then...but what type of a math person would i be under all that i just said??

A person who is good at math…

I would say that you would be better off as an applied math major than as an engineer. However, engineering is the better major.

haha what makes you say that i’d be better off as an applied math major??

well i was just wondering about this whole thing bc when i look back at it…i feel a little insecure bc i didn’t make AIME…even though all i had to do was leave a question blank…also about that…is a 98.5 on the AMC 12 a pretty high score for someone who got a 700 on SAT II Math 2C??

Why would you feel insecure about a math test you took back in high school? Just forget about it.

haha i came across those tests lately…and plus that’s how boring my job is lol…

are there any math contests like on the same level as the AMC 12 or AIME (or like Mandlebrot, ARML, or Harvard / MIT math contest) that people can take as adults just for fun???

If you out of college, its a little late. Honestly if your job is so boring that you dwell on math contests that you took as kid, you may have made the wrong career choice.
