the "undecided" major and med school

Hey I am a high school senior and I was just wondering if it is a good idea to choose the "undecided" major. I am very nervous about college and I am not sure if I will be qualified to be a likely candidate for medical school. If I choose to major in Biology and find out that I'll be getting B's and C's during my junior and senior year, I have no chance of getting into med school. Is it wise to choose "undecided" and see if I am good in the sciences and then choose the biology major at the end of my sophmore year? Thank you.

Yup, that’s a perfectly fine plan - just make sure you don’t have to select your major sooner (though, you will likely be able to change it after your initial selection). You might also want to plan your courses to allow for a backup major, e.g. you take a lot of chem or English courses alongside your bio reqs so that you can change into a chem/English major, if you end up not liking bio.

Good luck! :)

That is absolutely fine! In fact, most people start off college “undecided” or they end up changing their minds a lot about a possible major in their first year (1st hand experience, lol). I originally started college thinking I’d be a bio major, changed my mind to neuroscience/behavioral biology, and have finally settled on a double major in applied math and psychology, none of which are like the sciences most people decide to major in as a premed.

Most schools don’t require you to officially declare a major till the end of your second year. So until then, try taking a variety of classes in different areas to see what you like along side taking some bio courses.

Above all, when choosing a major, make sure it is one that you really like! If you are content with the classes you have to take for a major, you’ll probably do better.

Good luck!!
