Well, I am a very motivated ccc student aiming at transferring to Haas/UCLA next year. I have a 4.0 so far but I'm on the verge of getting a B in macroeconomics. If I drop the class would it look bad due to the fact that it is a prerequisite? I am very unhappy with taking this class with my particular professor. I feel that I did not learn the subject well enough and I believe I was also faced with extenuating circumstances late this quarter (dad-surgery, grandpa-cancer, me-car accident).

you’re fine.

i just looked at like 5 threads with w’s in them. If it’s only one, you’re fine, unless it’s a pre-req.

Uh… It is a W

He already stated its a prereq…

I don’t think one W will hurt you, even if it is a prereq. Just explain the situation to them when you apply. If it were me, I would just study hard on the final and maybe push the grade to a B+ (assuming u go to de anza). But if you really think you can get an A next time around, then drop it.

ps. I thought the deadline to drop with a W already passed.

not all schools start and end on the same day

… you’re not the only one who has a brain here.

Since his name is cupertinotrnsfr, I am assuming he goes to De Anza CC (the main CC around Cupertino) in which the deadline to drop with a W has already passed.

Don’t drop a major pre-req that’s a biggie most drop on this forum so far are classes that are not pre-reqs and just extra classes they chose to take.

I would talk to someone at Haas and figure it out A B shouldn’t make or break you especially if you have a 4.0.

A B in a major pre-req is better than not having taken it imo

Yes the deadline has passed for De Anza but if it is an extraneous circumstance, they may allow me to drop the class (i.e. taking care of people, illness, etc). If a W does not affect my chances, and UCs don’t care about 1-2 Ws then I will surely take advantage of this “lifeline.” Thanks guys.

I don’t really have time to ask anyone from Haas. I hope you are wrong Peter.

don’t drop it. ECON IS 100% VITAL. doing this will more likely that not disqualify you altogether. if you already sent in your application, they won’t be seeing this grade and you’ll be getting in. It won’t kill you when it comes to getting into graduate school either. it’s not worth the risk in my book.

1 W isnt going to hurt.

if you feel that you could earn a better grade under better circumstances then drop it and earn that A in the summer.

yes but there are some major prereqs which are IMPERATIVE to take. some can be dropped, others can’t.

example of those courses for UC Irvine
Econ 180 and econ 185
Calc 180 and 185

there is a 0% chance of getting into irvine if you don’t have those 4 done with a C or better(for bus econ and econ at least)

I’d expect HAAS to be even more strict than easy old UC Irvine.

I am transferring next year Xelink. I have a lot of time to take the class again. I am only a freshman.

ohh, you’re fine then, a single W shouldn’t matter much. just make sure it’s the exception and not the norm.

well i dont know about major prereqs that are imperative to take…i dont know how competitive it is but generally W’s don’t hurt unless they are excessive and inexcusable.

i guess you should call the admissions office and consider xelinks advice, being that xelink has experience in that area.

looks like no one here knows what they’re talking about. i talked to haas last year to see if it’s better to get a B in a class or a W, and the haas rep told me taht a B would be better.

For macro, which is a core prereq, if u get a C u have no chance to get in to haas. but with a B u have a chance. So if u can’t get a B, drop the class and get a W.

as long as u get straight A’s on all the other prereqs and take all the 7 breadth for grades (and get all A’s), one B won’t matter. getting a B hurts, but haas would rather see you get a B than quit with a W.

jsut remember, if u get a W, u better get an A the next time around. or else ur screwed

i would say drop it and take it again later, out of curiosity, who’s your professor? I had Mack and I know he made it seem like most of the class was doing poorly though he did end up giving out quite a few A’s…

seems like me and laker posted at the same time, but he seems to be better informed so i’d probably go with his advice and stick to getting a B…unless you would like to go for regents (i know you need a 4.0 to qualify, at least at la, but i’m not sure how they treat W’s…) and i actually had mack for micro, not that it matters

i would say to lakerforever24 that i do know what i am talking about when i saw that Ws don’t matter.

ive talked to several UCLA transfer reps and a couple uc counselors and they say that Ws arent a big deal. i have several and was accepted to ucla, ucsd, ucsb but i wasnt accepted to CAL because i didnt have 1 prereq.

if you have 15 or more Ws you would have to explain real well but below that youre fine.

^now it is very clear to me that not only do u not know what ur talking about, but u don’t understand anything that the OP is saying/asking either. no one cares what UCLA reps say. and no one cares what traditional Berkeley reps say either. Haas is a different college at berkeley. it’s not the same college that u got rejected from (letters and sciences). haas is way harder and they don’t accept any underachievers with 14 W’s (which u say is “fine”). one W is acceptable but suspect. but 2 W’s in prereqs is borderline unacceptable. and u may think W’s are “fine” right now, but dont come back here in 5 yrs when u get rejected from all the grad schools

lakerforever24- underachievers? your an arrogant assssss.

there are many reasons why people would acquire so many W’s with acceptable excuses, being underachieving isn’t a cause for so many W’s i would think a low GPA has more to do with underachieving.

im Sure 1 W wouldnt hurt an acceptance to Haas, i know exactly what im saying. perhaps i inquired information for letters and sciences, but i also inquired about UC admission at specified schools i.e. business, law and medicine schools.

I for one like the advice that i received from my UCLA rep, the counselors and advisers i spoke to. I feel confident with the information they gave me.
