@BeALonghorn: @dmrunn Decisions aren’t normally released by school (except honors). All decisions will be released by March 1.
@Thelma2 Probably a good thing your son checks daily. I was checking daily for my 2 sons and saw in the morning one son was accepted (about 3 weeks ago). We didn’t get the email until about 10 hours later. Still checking daily for the other son, with fingers crossed. OOS, by the way.
@IAMomofTwins Good luck to your other son. What major is he waiting for?
Will they split up for school if he doesn’t get admitted to UT?
I will have three in college next year, all at different schools, one that is out of state, and will spend a lot of time on I-35, going north and south.
@Thelma2 Son #1 was admitted to Physics. Son #2 applied for CS, with RTF as his 2nd choice major. Son #1 was ready to accept his admission, so I guess he was OK with going to separate schools, but I suggested we wait to see what happens. In the meantime they were both accepted at U of IL Urbana-Champaign, both awarded scholarships there (before FAFSA was submitted) and both admitted to Honors. It kind of changed the thought process a little. They expected to be admitted, but not to receive $ and Honors. I’m pretty sure though if Son #2 is accepted at UT, that’s where they’ll go (even though UIUC is ranked higher than UT).
There are many different rankings and I’m not saying anyone should decide based on rankings, buy FWIW, UIUC is generally not ranked as high as UT for CS. See here for example: www.usnews.com/education/best-global-universities/computer-science
(UT 6, UIUC 41).
@Austinwannabe You’re right, there are plenty of rankings out there and if a person looks hard enough, they can find one that says what they want it to. I think I’m just trying to soothe myself if UT doesn’t happen for Son #2. He has his heart set on it. The rankings aren’t important to him.
@IAMomofTwins I think it is smart not to obsess over rankings too much. UIUC has an excellent CS program with a great reputation. I also think there are some excellent up-and-coming programs, like UT Dallas, whose rankings have not caught up with them yet.
Little disappointed to see that UT’s Architecture school dropped from #6 to #10 in the country. I got accepted into Cal Poly yesterday who has the #2 ranked program and should hear from #3 Virginia Tech within the next few weeks. I still love UT but it makes it a tough decision to take the #10 over #2 or 3
Really? You think there is a big difference between 6 and 10? Which metric caused them to drop? Is it one that matters to you?
@dweaver16 I hope you know ranking isn’t everything. Also just because one place ranks something one way might mean some other place ranks the same thing a different way. You really shouldn’t get this “rankings are everything” in your head. Go to UT if you like the school and a whole lotta people from Texas. You’ll get the same or better education at UT than the other schools you’re looking at, and I’m sure employers aren’t going to be like “Oh, UT is ranked #10 in the country by a random ranking website? Sorry, not good enough!” Cal Poly and VT are great schools but seriously – pick what’s best for you and not what’s ranked higher. I was admitted to UW Madison but I’d go to UT over UW. UT is ranked 11 spots lower than UW on US News. Does that sway my decision if I get into UT? Not at all. UT is my top choice school because it’s just right for me (as a native Texan!), considering my personal preferences.
@dweaver16 the rankings fluctuate year to year. The top 10 are (for the most part) always moving up and down, but the fact that they all jockey around says that they’re all fantastic programs!
(in case you’re curious, UT is actually number 7 this year)

My daughter applied in November I believe and found out Dec.18th she was auto accepted but we are still waiting to hear about her major, it is in the CNS (college of natural sciences I hope that is the name lol) do you think this is a bad sign? Also if she doesn’t get into her major does she for sure get her second one or how does that work?
Someone’s kid from our area found out about his acceptance to UT Austin in BME- central Texas.
Have most people heard back at this point? Is it bad if you haven’t yet?
@cocowils8 no, it does not seem as if the last great wave has been released. I have a feeling this board will be inundated with post when that happens.
It is expected some time by this weekend.
@bookmom7 Great, thank you!
Has anyone gotten rejected or capped yet?
comparatively to other colleges at UT Austin, how hard is it to get into entry level biology major at CNS? my SAT score is above the overall CNS average (assuming this hasn’t changed to much). Im in a wide variety of clubs at school as well as outside of school. I have some leadership positions at my temple, and I also won a scholarship through a student leadership program. These are only some of my merits, When i applied, i wasnt auto admit, but I was close to being auto admitted. Top 9.3% (8% was the cutoff this year). I feel as though my essays were strong and I also sent in an expanded resume just because it cant hurt.
Any info regarding how hard CNS is to get in to would be greatly appreciated and best of luck to anyone else who is waiting to hear back. Try not to worry, You’ll get in.
Cheers!,
