The University of Texas Class of 2020 Decisions Thread

Hello everyone. I am OOS. I applied 11/3 for computer engineering. Do you think it was too late?

We also paid the $50 deposit to save our space ‘in line.’ I do not believe you get a refund if you decline acceptance but, like @piesquared stated- it is just part of the process cost.

@GustafAngus - if you applied by 12/1- you will be considered- good luck!

@bookmom I know, but my stats arent exactly amazing. I have a 28 ACT with a 33 in the math part. And I know that Texas schools have a first come-first serve rule, so I am wondering if I applied too late. I just really wanted to perfect my essays

@GustafAngus - you are correct in that it is difficult for an OOS at UT Austin because of the 8% rule (not sure about the first come-first serve for engineering). I know class rank is very important/ along with test scores, etc. Sounds like you put in the required effort on your essays.

Also, my S did not apply to Cockrell so, I probably don’t have all the info you may need. I do know others on this site are engineering majors - Hopefully some of them will chime in.

@bookmom7 Thanks for your help. Also, my school doesn’t rank. I am a US citizen living in Slovenia, Europe, attending a Slovenian high school which baffled the admissions office as where to categorize me (OOS or International). I ended up as OOS (thank heavens), but my school doesn’t rank, neither does any other school in my country, so I don’t have a rank.

I recently sent in my application and was wondering what you guys think my chances of getting in would be as an OOS applicant? 1960 SAT, 7 AP’s, 2nd in my class, a bunch of extracurriculars, good letter of recommendations, believe essays were great, and I also own my own non-profit that raises money for Alzheimer’s research. Based on this do you think my chances are low, average, above average? I have over 200 hours of community service as well through my church.

@koda288712 It completely depends on the college/major you applied to.

@cappex I applied for Political Communications as my first choice and Computer Science as my second choice.

I have not got any letter yet. I am auto. Applying for CS/Turing/ Dean. No worry, the admission letters will be sent out eventually.

I submitted app before 10/15/2015

I think I have great chance get into CS

If I may ask another question, I am now torn between sending just my ACT or both my ACT and SAT. Here are my stats: ACT: 28 (20 Writing, 25 Science, 29 English, 26 Reading and a 33 in math).
My SAT score is a 1900 (660 math, 640 writing and 600 reading.). I know both scores aren’t exactly amazing, and I have little chance of getting into cockrell with them, but I’ve only sent ACT scores so far, mostly because of the high math score. Anyone’s opinion?

@GustaAngus, I gave you my opinion on this question on the other thread about Chances for Computer Science. I think you should go with the ACT scores only but my reasons on that thread. Again, good luck and write a great essay.

@GustafAngus Two things: UT is not first come first serve on majors. A&M is. Most auto admits are still waiting on their majors for business and engineering, even those who applied in August.

Second, send both scores. UT uses the one that helps you the most in their formulas. Search AI or academic index in this forum to find a link to the formulas for engineering.

@gettingschooled thats good about no first come first serve for UT. I applied to UT on Nov 2nd, which I thought was late, but I applied to A&M on August 28th., so that was pretty early in my opinion. Thanks everyone!

my stats: SAT2390, top 10 of 600, taken 9APs, senior 5APs. applied for CS on 10/11/2015. did not get notification so far.

yeah i got accepted like last month but totally forgot to post
hope this helps ppl applying in the future

Governor’s Summer Merit Program- STEM
Essays: Topic A was (8/10)great, I talked about basketball and the my team getting better over the season
Topic B was good (7/10), I talked about overcoming my fear of public speaking through participation in Debate;
Topic C was awesome (10/10), I talked about my passion for medicine and basically told a story of what first sparked my interest in medicine and the later events in my life that furthered that interest, The beginning and the end had a theme of epigenetics and how cells are specialized through a hill with many groove metaphor which I connected to my life and how my interest and skills have specialized
Teacher Recommendation: Biology teacher- I waived FERPA rights but I’m sure this was really good. I have known her since summer school before freshman year and took her AP class later in high school and also became Vice President then President in Science National Honor Society, the club she sponsors
World History and European History teacher- This was prolly also great because I did extremely well in both of her classes and got to know her in Debate because she was cosponsor and Model UN because she is sponsor
Counselor Rec: Hers was prolly good, we dont each other that much but she has worked with me on my national merit application and I have talked with her several times starting 10th grade.

Reflection
Getting into Biomedical Engineering at UT is awesome because I thought that because it was a public school with a very competitive engineering program I would get rejected because not being in top 3%, which many friends said was basically a requirement. This goes to show that everything else in your application does matter and that applying doesnt hurt to try

Strengths: test scores, recs, essays, ECs
What you tried to focus on in your application - any hooks you tried to make for yourself: commitment and passion for medicine
Weaknesses:GPA, rank
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: auto admit got me into main university but I think my ECs, test scores, essays, and recs helped out on getting into cockrell
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: So far, UTSA, UTD, Texas A&M, University of Oklahoma, UH, Baylor

If I submitted my application around november 28th and applied for ChemE, am I basically going to not get the major because of capacity in ChemE?
My stats are good for ChemE (2310 SAT, Top 10 in school of 820 students, good ECs related to Engineering/Science).
Also, my backup major is MechE, so am I safe in terms of major, since MechE is a larger program?

You’ll likely get your major because all engineering majors go through review.

when is the next big wave of acceptances?
