The University Of Texas

Ok, so I was searching in Google for something else about UT, but this popped up, and I remembered how much it helped me with school applications and etc. Since I am a student at UT, I thought it might be nice for ya'll to ask me questions, but here's what I can tell you so far.

High School:
I am sure plenty of you want to know my stats and etc.

GPA: 3.46 Weighted
Rank: 295/697
SATs: 730 Math 600 English 710 Reading - 1330 Composite
ACT: 36 Math 32 English 33 Reading 29 Math - 31 Composite

I played baseball alot in High School, traveled all over the US and played in many tournaments and have a lot of national recognition as far as trophies and etc. I think my baseball team was ranked like 5, 8, 3 in the nation while I was in high school. Blew out the arm, so no more.

anyways yep my stats do suck, and you may not believe me but I did make the fall semester here at UT, I am a first year EE student.

UT So Far:

my room mate is tight, we get along well. I live in Jester West, the room is a decent size, and doesn't bother me. UT is probably the best campus in Texas, but to be honest the people here suck, and it doesn't help that I am studying electrical engineering.

I have made alot of friends with the business people here, as they to seem to be the most social and chill.

Uh, UT is suppose to be diverse, and it is, but it is insanely segreated, and really hurts the school spirit. This isn't to say there aren't great blacks, asians, and indian people here. But for example, if you go to Gregory, the student workout and gym place, there are 7 basketball courts. Everyday in prime time, there is an asian game of basketball, a hispanic/black game of basketball, an indian game of basketball, a upper classmen of white basketball, 2 freshmen games where anyone can play, and an open court for volleyball. It has been ok for me, b/c i play with the frehmen, but I am 6'5'' and about 200 lbs, and look older so I can play with the upper class white older guys too. But ya point is, it is very sad that it is very segregated. Also, the frats are the same way, I have a good indian friend and asian friend. I was totally chill with the asian frats good times, but I got a few wierd looks at the indian frats and some not so nice comments or w.e. So I stick to the white frats mostly, and I wouldn't even want to guess what would happen if I went to a black frat. Some things are just insanely segregated at UT, and it is mostly b/c A&M and Tech have all white people, and the rest come to UT, and I guess its just not as friendly as what you think.

But besides the people here, the school is amazing and fun as hell. Friends are a little harder to make here then A*M and Tech, from what I've heard. The classes are pretty hard for EE majors, but the EE professors are amazing so far. Just watch out for the damn Math and Physics professors, they don't know hwo to teach tbh. So far the business teachers and philosophy teachers are pretty damn good too.

I'm a little short on time seeing as I am about to go out for the night, but just post anything you want to know and I'll help for a while. I'll favorite this page and keep checking on it once a day for about two weeks, so just tell me if you want to know anything.

Sorry to cut it short, pz and good luck to you all applying.

-Elias Dragon

haha I enjoyed reading that. thanks for the info.
That sucks that the school is pretty segregated like that. I never thought of that. I hope I’ll fit in easily since I’m out of state, I won’t know anyone at all…

btw did u apply instate?

hey do you think I have a shot at getting in? I’m applying for natural sciences and then liberal arts..
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/417407-chances-ut-austin.html

yes i did apply instate and as for chances ill reply in your thread

Hey thanks for the reply. I kinda thought that being asian might hurt, seeing that the school is like 17% asian ..or something like that.

Also, I’m in the same situation as you were. UT-Austin is my first choice… and Texas A&M is my second choice, which I’m sure I’ll get in.. esp. since I’m asian lol. But I was wondering.. are you completely satisfied with being in UTA? maybe you think you’d like A&M more? For me it’s like … 70% I want to be at UTA and 30% for A&M. If I get into both, I’d probably have to think about it..

Btw, I did get into UT Dallas. What do you think of that school?
And again, thanks for replying. I really appreciate it =]

I beg to differ about the EE classes(well first semester anyway). My circuits teacher is nice but horrible, and ambler for ee306 is cool but he fails to go over the important stuff until like 2 days before things. Every programming assignment thus far, he hasn’t explained anything about it until the last minute, which makes it a hassle to start things early. Not to mention he waste some classes doing nothing, for instance the class before a test, instead of reviewing, he decided to go over some ■■■■■■■■ warning labels on products the WHOLE class

5 or 6 of my friends ended up at UT Dallas just based on how much money they were giving out to people. My friend got financial aid and merit scholarships and isn’t paying much at all. Its just as good for EE and comp sci and other related majors.

All the schools I ever went to have been “clicky” so this doesn’t bother me too much. I am indian and haven’t had any experiences that were that bad.

Yeh heh -_-;; you have Preston for EE302 don’t you? I can tell. Foxshox, my AIM is TheDragon0506 hit me up.

Ya i was considering maybe transferring to A&M, I’d have to think about it hard. I’m gonna cut this one short too, I am insanely tired.

yep preston.. im sccr988, im nik btw

The people suck everywhere. And they are good everywhere. If you aren’t happy with the people, it’s likely that you are going threw a common adjustment period and perhaps haven’t found the right group of friends.

I don’t know the stats, but I certainly know this is false. There are a lot of hispanics at Tech, a decent amount of blacks, and a lot of Indians (at least graduate student Indians). There aren’t many asians because frankly, there aren’t many asians in West Texas.

Frats are like that everywhere. How about this novel concept: DON’T JOIN A FRAT

Now you know what it feels to be a minority. Deal with it and stop whining. Who gives a crap if someone gives you a look? (btw, maybe they just think you’re ugly or something)

Well, the small town vs city lifestyle will definitely cause some differences, but really it will vary per person. BTW, I attended Tech for undergrad and in one dorm everyone talked and was friends. However, I moved to another dorm later and there nobody talked to anybody. I could definitely see it being easy or hard there to meet people at Tech.

In Texas, UTA is UT Arlington. Texas is just UT ;-)

^haha ooh my bad.
yea.. maybe it’s an OOS mistake lol >_<
but yea I meant UT =P

i disagree strongly, the people are very different. At Texas people are more to themselves, and have small clicks. Which is true for everyone to a certain extent, but when I’ve been down to Tech and A&M it is defiently a very different atmosphere. Of course the demographics aren’t 100% white people, but I can honestly say that when I visited Tech to see a friend, I saw 2 black people all weekend, and not many asians and indians. There is nothing wrong with it, it is just a VERY different enviornment. And so sue me if I like to get out and see the party life of the undergrad a little bit. Meh, but ya if you have any questions about UT, i can offer what I’ve expirenced here so far.

I am not saying UT is bad, in my opinion Tech, A&M, and UT are all very good schools with just very different atmospheres, thats all.

Regargs.

Sorry for the double post, but ya as for my classes:

the EE professors are nice, but the classes are hard as hell
the math professor I have is insanely horrible
my micro econ prof is amazing, and a great person, makes the class a breeze
my philosophy prof is insane, but the TAs do all the grading so its ok

my grades are going to look like this

M408D - High C Low B (Hope Low b for 3.0)
ECO304K - A
PHL302- High B, Low A (Hope A)
EE302 - High B, Low A (Probably High B, depends on finial)
EE306 - oh God save me… this class is like going back to kindergarden are relearning that 1+1=2, you learn so much its hard to keep up, basically Nik laid it on the nail, the grading is insanely hard. Hopefully he curves up, I’ve had to send him emails about my grade, hoping that he’ll make a special exception, and he said he might, I just have to talk to him. I am doing really bad in this class sigh.

do you have ledyard?

lol yep! good guess -_-;;

^hey TDRAG,
on my Chances thread.. you mentioned, “undecided entrance.” Would you explain that? thanks! =]

408d is really easy with my teacher.. the review is practically the test, so somehow i got 100’s on both test.. Im in ledyard too, probably going to make a B when its all said and done, unless I can somehow manage to get an A on the final. EE306 is pretty easy for me, I made an 81 on the last test so I am not too worried, the programming assignments are just a lot of work, but practically a free grade.I have a test tommorow in 302 and i am so f’ed its unbelievable.

laugh, i got a 38 on the first test in 306… and a 67 on the 2nd one… and im doing horrible on the homeworks… sigh

302 for some reason i have a 80 on the first test and a 100 on the 2nd one, and the one tommorow,

my 408d teacher is Sadler and hes ridiculous, class avgs. of first 2 tests: 54, 56

he 10 point curved the first one, and 13 point curved the 2nd one, i got a 70 on the first one and a 53 on the 2nd one, i don’t see this is fair that like most of the class is doing ****, so basically im sitting at like an 80+66/2 which is still a low C… got one more test and the final… and im not sure if he curves the overall grades

im just scared about 306 thats all, if i pass ill be happy at this point i guess

Haha the hits just keep on coming. I am in Sadler, Ledyard, and Ambler… are you in preston too!?!.. I got a 100 on both of Sadler’s tests, they were just like the review haha. I don’t see how people do bad on his tests. I think he actually took off random points on my last test so he could curve more. There were like 4 unjustified points taken off, but after the curve I made a 100. I gotta study for that test tomorrow(friday for math) or I am screwed. I haven’t taken notes in about a month and a half, and I haven’t done a homework since last test( I copy them straight off the answer pdf I have). 302, I got a 92 and a 73. I hate preston so much.

Maybe you were just hanging out with white cliques at Tech (or white Fraternities)? Also, do you see a huge number of African Americans at UT? I don’t have the current figures, but in 2000 and 2001, UT’s percentage of African American students was at 3.6 and 3.2 percent. This is as opposed to Tech which was at 3.4 and 3.1 percent respectively.

Of course the atmosphere at Tech is different than the atmosphere at UT and A&M. However, to use antecedal evidence to make blanket statements is a little ridiculous.

I was actually like touring the campus for the day, since I have never been down there, b/c I never considered going to Tech. So… ya… and I do see a lot of black people at UT… and alot of asians and alot of indians. If I had to rank them it’d be:

Asian

Indian

White

Black

Black people are still the minority, but there are defiently is a large black community here at UT that hold a lot of events, so I probably see 100-300 black people a day here. a day, sir. I see probably 400-500 white people, 600-700 indians, and 1200-2000 asians a day. Just walking from classes and in my classes.

Also, all of my class are 200+ and my largest class has about 792 enrolled, I believe this was the correct number.

oh sorry, ya sometimes like lets say you apply for business, which is the hardest to get into, and fills up the fastest…

then sometimes they come back to you and say, sorry we can’t offer you admissions into the business school but we can offer you… and they usually do one of the following, ill rank them from least common to most common

Come to UT and you are undecided, take basic courses and then xfer into your school you want

Come to UT during the summer, and you are automatically accepted for fall

go to our CAP program, wehre you to to UT-A, or UT-SA, or UT-BLAH for one year then xfer in automatically as long as you have a 2.5 or something.
