The US is expected to eventually become majority non-white...

It is worth noting that California became not-majority-white at around 2000, and racism (most commonly against Latino people) appeared to increase in the 1990s leading up to that.

Prop 227 (English only elementary education) was just overturned by a wide margin with prop 58 in CA, and most Californians seem to appreciate the economic importance of immigration to our economy now. Of course we have pockets of bigotry, as when ICE wanted to open a detention center in Murrieta and the buses were blocked from entering the site.

All white kids attending a UC are in the minority, and it doesn’t seem to have had any effect on applications- especially to the top ranked campuses. Perhaps the fact that most white UC students are minorities on their campus has led to increased tolerance and acceptance. The community college-Cal State-UC system has also meant a steady flow of previously underrepresented minorities into professional fields, from banking to medical care. You become desensitized to race when the professionals you work with on a daily basis represent the full spectrum of “color”.

Yes, the racism in California that rose in the 1990s has subsided somewhat. Presumably, many of the white people who feared becoming a minority either (a) realized it was nothing to fear after living through the change, (b) emigrated from the state, or © died due to age.

@ucbalumnus I first read the last part of your post as “died due to rage”. I could see both happening.

The future will belong to the multilingual, which will hopefully help out the liberal arts majors!

And now we have taco trucks on every corner. Yum!

One massive yawn. I worry about tornadoes, my wife commuting on snowy roads, my kids away at school, and the crazy mullahs. I have never worried about America becoming non-white in some distant date. I only want America to be American.

That’s great–but is it really a “yawn”? Aren’t you at least a little worried that so many other Americans are concerned about losing a white majority? I know it bothers me to see how pervasive that sentiment is…

My kid’s public school district here in West Texas is 67% Hispanic.

deleted, accidental post of draft fragment.

I have done my job as contributing to the non white population as D21 is 1/2 Caucasian and 1/2 Punjabi. Not common here in West Texas but she fits in well with her well diversified school.

Not concerned about it at all

People are fearful, it is part of human nature, change is always difficult to accept. I remember when the killer bees moving north into the US created much anxiety. And rightfully so but in the end the bees wound up integrating with the northern species of bees and their aggressiveness was subdued over time. We are in the change portion of our history when the status quo will change. In the end it will equalize and become less fearful. I think it important to make sure we don’t lose our freedoms in the process. The supreme court will play a pivotal role in this and look to another decade of gerrymandering of voting districts in 2020 to bolster their cause.

21 or more daughters?? Congrats!!

Hahaha, @sorghum, if I had 21 daughters I would be in a looney bin! D21 is class of 2021.

“21 or more daughters?? Congrats!!”

Well, THAT would definitely have been a contribution.

I went to a conference in the mid-80’s where a demographer told us this way back then … the writing has been on the wall for many years.

Yes, the apparent pervasiveness of that sentiment may be bothersome, particularly to non-white people who may be concerned that many white people view them as part of a “threat” simply by being.

It looks like the people willing to post on this thread are not the ones who are worried about the US becoming majority non-white.

Yes, and that’s encouraging

But then it’s discouraging that there are some who aren’t the least bit concerned about the level of racism among their fellow white folks.

fwiw, those of you that want this to happen ASAP for your personal political agenda are probably contributing to the reason that some other people are worried.

personally, I’m meh.

I also now that minorities are not a monolithic group, nor are they here to be exploited for a political agenda.

YMMV
