The us system

I go to a German school in Spain and I while looking at the application pages on many college websites, I was just wondering how many subjects do u.s junior high school students have. I have only three subjects that I chose to go to (Chemistry, Biology and French) but the the remaining eight subjects (Maths, German,Spanish, English, History taught in Spanish, History taught in German, Sports, Art)are all compulsory. I mean, on wednesdays I go in at 8.00 in the morning and I don't come out until 19.15. Is your schedule like that?

I live in New Jersey and my school forces us to take Science, Math, English, Career, Language, History, and Physical Education.

I go in at 8am and get out at 3pm if I don’t have any clubs. My school is a magnet school so we have block scheduling and a few other different things than normal public school but its almost similar.

Your school system sounds interesting. How long is each class?

I go to school in the States, and I go to school from 7:15 - 3:00. I have 7 classes (each being 50 minutes long) with 5 minute breaks in between each class, plus a 30 minute lunch. My school requires 4 years of math, English, history, and science classes, 2 years of a foreign language class, and 1 year of a gym and fine arts class. After that, you can choose whatever class you want to take. Some seniors who have all of their required credits can choose to either have late arrival or early dismissal, but not both.

I’m also involved in a few clubs, but they’re mainly active on the weekends.

well, my school has 45 minute classes and one 20 minute break at 10.20 and one 15 minute break at 12.20. we also have 5 minute breaks between classes to switch classrooms)which usually takes about 1 minutes and the rest we start the class because teachers think we waste too much time if not).
I really like my school in the sense that is very demanding, nevertheless it has some defects. I would have loved it if my school had the kind of clubs u.s high school clubs have. Just today I was thinking how wonderful it would be to have a debate team. Most of the clubs are just sport clubs. I joined the fencing club during the 5th and 6th grade and even at that age I loathed the lack of interest and competitiveness. That´s why I look forward to attending to college in the U.S.A because the clubs and and activities just seem to good to be true from this side of the ocean. My brother goes to uni here at our city and the involvement and the sense of “community” is non-existent.
