hopkins,
(jhu is my first choice too :D)

Just to know by being a vegetarian, you are hurting your brain :)
(and I am not going to JHU, I am a freshman at the University of Rochester)

To all the vegans and vegetarians out there, it's fine if you think that eating meat is unethical, but I don't think you'll persuade many meat eaters with that logic. It's kind of like Christians telling you to convert because otherwise you'll go to hell.

I believe eating meat is ethical because society deems it so, simple as that.

And I just want to add Argentina and India are not considered third world. The Hwang Ho is in china(not third world) and Egypt is not third world.

I would just like to say that I could put a lot of facts in here (I just wrote a research paper on this) but I won't right now because they mostly have been said. I would just like to remention a couple.
One pound of beef from a typical factory farm takes approximately 5 pounds of grain, 2,500 gallons of water, the energy equivalent of a gallon of gasoline and causes 35 pounds of eroded topsoil. This is only for ONE pound!

Also, eating meat is not cruel to animals because they have never said they are suffering? would you keep a newborn baby in the same conditions as farm animals even though they can't say they are suffering?
(I know this sounds extreme, but it's the same reasoning)

thats hilarious a_ravin, you concede a point that you have been arguing with me for 5 pages. Thank you Hopkins.

Let's say beef costs about $4 per pound on average (lots of ground beef parts and some pricey parts). You're telling me that my $4 buys the equivalent of 5 pounds of grain, 2500 gallons of water, and 35 pounds of topsoil? Topsoil sells for like $10 per 20 lb! What a great deal!

ryan and imblue
you dont have to be rigid and act like twerps.
giving credit to your opponent is a nice quality.
accepting your mistakes is also a nice quality.
ARGUING JUST FOR THE SAKE OF ARGUING IS NOT. (THAT IS WHAT YOU ARE DOING)
HAVE THE GUTS TO SAY...I EAT MEAT BECOZ I LIKE IT. (I APPRECIATE IMBLUE FOR THAT)...JUSTIFYING YOUR CHOICE BY ARGUING LAMELY....AND JUST REFUTING WHAT OTHERS SAY AND REFUSING TO BUDGE....IS SO SO SO ***********

No I just have the guts to stand up for people that are unfairly criticized by people like you. You give Vegans a bad name and I have friends that are vegans that are much more reasonable than you are.

We are not currently admitting any mistakes because we have not made any, you have admitted the water thing because the intelligent hopkins proved my point that i have been making post after post with his article. The land is not useable for agriculture dumbass!

Please just quit while you have some dignity left.

summary of A_Ravin's brilliant points:

Nile, Ganges, and Hwang Ho are beautiful and not polluted

All poor people in third world countries should resort to farming land thats not capable of being farmed

Organic Crops are good for the soil

Argentina, India, China, and Egypt are third world countries

Grains are better than cows and sheep for people in third world countries

human waste is not a problem in the ganges or nile rivers

humans are not meant to eat meat

animals are destructive to the environment

animal protein is bad

people should listen to me just because animals are treated poorly(simply idealistic and not realistic)

I get my facts from "how to win an argument with a meat eater" terrorist PETA poster.

Ryan Distorting My Points...huh??
Proving Yourself Great By Pulling Me Down...nice Try.
You Skipped The Biological Magnification Point Very Convineiently.........

everyone deserves one decent point; however you still havent shown me an article where the pesticides in meat have been detrimental to humans in the US. Which I believe was the original argument.

and a_ravin you dont need any help, you have pulled yourself down this whole thread.

ryan
i never criticized you....all i called you was an idiot...( and that too affectionately hahaha)
i was just posting random facts....when u butted in and got me all charged up.
i have nothing against meat eaters...my whole family eats meat with the exception of my great grandpa ....i still love them..
at the end of the day....turning veg. is a personal choice so...it is entirely up to you.
also the point is not that there are free roaming varieties available....the point is that the majority of the animals that are kept for meat are kept in inhumane conditions....and as an animal lover...i feel it is my "self assigned" duty to promote the cause of animal welfare

who cares if eating meat causes cancer...??? personally i dont...
i would remain veg. even if i knew that eating veggies causes cancer....
My suffering isnt as important as that of millions of animals worldwide...they have an equal right over this world.....they belong here too.

our society is full of hypocrites...we watch 'CHICKEN LITTLE' while eating chicken little

AS THESE POSTS POINT OUT...I AM NOT A VEGETARIAN BECOZ OF HEALTH BENEFITS...I AM VEGETARIAN BECOZ I LOVE ANIMALS....I DONT CARE WHAT PEOPLE LIKE YOU THINK ABOUT ME...MY WHOLE BIOLOGY CLASS APPRECIATED MY EFFORT...MY TEACHER TOLD ME THAT SHE PLANS TO LESSEN THE AMOUNT OF MEAT IN HER DIET...WHICH IS HEARTENING...CALL ME WHATEVER YOU LIKE...BUT REMEMBER...EVERY SECOND 70 ANIMALS DIE...EVERY SECOND.

I VALUE LIFE. KILLING AN ANIMAL IS LIKE KILLING A HUMAN BEING...MURDER. THAT IS THE WAY I FEEL...YOU ARE FREE TO DIFFER. BUT COME WHAT MAY...I WILL NOT KEEP QUIET. EVEN IF IT MEANS...SWALLOWING MY DIGNITY AND LISTENING TO NONSENSE FROM PEOPLE...MY LOVE YOU SEE IS UNCONDITIONAL.

"Someone is on the governments list for risks."

i dont get what you mean....and if my accepting defeat pleases your ego and convinces you to REDUCE the amount of meat in you diet...than i accept defeat...happy???

i have have won this debate countless times...from my parents, my friends everyone....but everytime anyone loses...he or she increases the amount of meat in his/her diet....just to show that they dont care about what i said.
so if my accepting defeat means one animal saved...i accept defeat in front of everyone. guess that made you happy.

thats quite amusing, the increasing the amount of meat in their diet thing. You must live a sad life.

"You must live a sad life"

not really. but i feel bad when people cant accept defeat gracefully. hah. at least i managed to convert my bf...for a few weeks...(the only person ever)...and he did that just to...well please me...and for other personal reasons....we broke up....becoz i wasnt comfy with his 'personal reason'.... yay!!
i do have a sad life :D

"Someone is on the governments list for risks."

DO YOU MEAN WHAT I THINK YOU MEAN??? HOW COULD YOU EVEN.....
:(

Ravin, you are not saving any animals, you are just wasting them...
As for you saying that you do it because you love animals, well just to prove your point that you can be a meat eater (normal eater) and still love animals.
PETA just spits out tons and tons of lies.
I just realized why vegetarians listen to them! By being a vegetarian, you lose some mental power (actual fact) and by losing that power you become susceptible to BS!
Ohh and by the way, the organization you adore so much is just a bunch of hypocrites. They kill 3/4 of the animals that they take in while city pounds on average only kill about 1/10
