The very first post! Alright!

If you all have any questions for a current WF student, lemme know@!

What sort of stats/transcript does one need to get into Wake? Like if I'm mid 1400s with about a 4.0 weighted and standard ec's and everything else, where do I stand?

SAT above 1300 and a GPA above 3.5 is definetely good. Right now you're still 50-50. Are your parents alumni or do you have any contacts here at Wake? Did you take AP/IB courses? Do you play sports?

What year are you? What are you majoring in? Is it hard to get good grades at Wake? Is Wake a party school? Is the school really what you expected? Do the small classes they boast about really benefit you and are the professors really as great as they say? If you are not in a sorority are you really an "outcast?" Overall, do you think Wake is giving you a good education? Lots of questions but these are things I'm wondering about! a reply would be greatly appreciated!

I don't have any strong ties to the school, I've taken a pretty challenging courseload (about 7 APs and the rest honors except for about 2 classes), and my SATs will be pretty close to 1500, probly upper 1400s. Don't play any sports anymore, but am fairly involved in other activities. GPA is 3.5ish us and 4.0 w.

Sorry I haven't been checking this page :-)

What year are you? Freshman
What are you majoring in? Goverment and Economics (possible Spanish minor)
Is it hard to get good grades at Wake? it depends. Generally, there is grade deflation and people generally don't make under a C.
Is Wake a party school? I suppose a little bit more than any other school on the eastern coast.
Is the school really what you expected? It has been pretty great. Great people, professors, campus.
Do the small classes they boast about really benefit you and are the professors really as great as they say? Small classes are great, especially in seminars (15 students), otherwise the classes have about 15-25 people, unless its an intro class in high demand (30). I'd say 10% 15 students, 80% 15-25, 10% 30.

If you are not in a sorority are you really an "outcast?" Not really. Half the students here are in either a f or a s. Either way, I'd say about 70% of the campus lives the lifestyle. If you don't like alcohol (not much drugs here surprisingly) you can live on substance-free dorms with hundreds of other people just like you. But really, there is no ostracizing here.

Overall, do you think Wake is giving you a good education? I think so. Surprisingly I miss my AP classes because I feel I leared more in them (a whole year as opposed to a semester), but the faculty is top-notch regardless. A lot of ivy-league educated faculty from the U.S. and from other countries like China/Taiwan, Germany, England, etc. I think our school is on par with Brown and other similarily ranked schools.

Lots of questions but these are things I'm wondering about! a reply would be greatly appreciated!

You have 10 questions out of 21 left to ask. :-) I kid! Let me know if you need any other advice or would like to know more.

Bluegreen, make sure you get excelent recs, visit the campus and show interest (adcoms here like that), and bang your personal statement.

I have loved almost everything about Wake ever since I first visited it in 10th grade, but one thing is bothering me: how homogenous do you feel that the student body is? Are there different kinds of people or are they all kind of the same? I read one place that they were all described as "white, preppy and Republican" with the girls walking around "wearing short skirts and talking on their cell phones."

Now, I'm not totally liberal or really anti-prep, but I'm kind of concerned because that's basically the school environment I've been in forever (a small NC private school) and I want to get out of that mold. I like to think out of the box and be different (although I'm not weird or anything) and I prefer to wear T-shirts and jeans over short skirts, lol.

Do you feel that the above is a typical description or not...and do you think I would fit? I've talked to the admissions people and they say yes, but I want the opinion of a student too.

Well, half the students here are Democrats and half Republicans, at least that's what I get from TheFaceBook. I would say 85-90% of the people here are white, but not all of them are preppy. There is less than 1% of people that walk around with popped collars. However, the parking lots here look like those at car dealerships (50% of students here bring their car) and a good chunk of students are pretty well off.

From my three months or so being here, I can say that the people here at Wake are great. I thought I would be surrounded by people that bought their way into Wake (there are some) and that all of them would be stuck-up (there are some) but I would say 60%-80% of the student body are "regular" people.

If you are a minority you are virtually an endangered species at Wake. If that doesn't bother you too much, then Wake's your place. There is no discrimination here, no ostracizing, and if you are a minority you will be able to survive.

There are some preppy girls that, from what I heard, go to football games with pearls, short skirts, etc. But not all of them. I would say that Wake doesn't feel too different than other schools. If I can clarify anthing, lemme know :-).

OK, that helps some...thanks :) Nah, I'm not a minority, but I was concerned about homogenity in the sense that everyone thought, dressed, and acted the same. Luckily, that doesn't seem to really be the case...good.

Well, I guess it depends on personal preferences. Visiting the campus (its perty) should help you decide. I really like the small size of the school.

What do you think my chances are for admission?

I'm going to pitch in my point of view on the type of students at Wake. I'm also a freshman here, and the atmosphere has been much better than I would have expected. I, too, had heard the all-preppy, all-rich, all-republican rumor. And it is just that, a rumor. True, the quad had been rolled the day after the election (I'm not sure if that was for Bush winning or because Richard Burr, an alumni of Wake Forest, had won North Carolina's senate seat; I didn't ask), but there were a lot of people who went around depressed about the results as well. And admittedly, the student body is, on the whole, pretty well off financially, but they are much less preppy than I'd expected. To be honest, I think that everyone has so much work to do that it's hard to project that "prep" image that you've got in your head. I guess that's part of it, too: we are united in our struggle to both get all our work done and to get sleep (especially around mid-terms). Even if the people here are preps, and I don't really feel that they are, they're the kind preps. The ones that you get along with, even if you know that you don't have much in common, rather than the petty, vindictive ones that you can't stand. I chose Wake in spite of the rumors about the student body because of what the school could offer me. I certainly haven't been disappointed with the academic environment, and I've been really pleasantly surprised with the social environment.

I agree with Ginnyvere (again) :-). Sammy, you've got a good chance... I'd put it at 65-70%. The SAT is great and GPA is great also. You might want to work on that US History SAT II, even though SAT IIs aren't required at Wake. Are you applying EA/ED/ALKFJAKSFJAKSJF?

my friend is applying regular decision and is convinced shes getting in with a 1300 SATI, 690 SATII US History, 720 SATII Writing, 700 SATII Spanish, and 3.5 GPA unweighted. she takes 2 languages and is an awesome writer so her essays will be very good...and shes all set with teacher recs...is she reaching?

50-50. You need connections, APs, high grades. How many schools is she applying to?

wow...only 50-50...hmmm what do you mean by connections? she doesnt have any alumni. she is applying to about 10 schools, wake included. do you have any advice for her or anything that might be good news for her? according to her this is her "dream school."

I'm a gay guy that's considering Wake Forest, but I'm afraid that the study body wouldn't be as accomodating as a more liberal place. I just don't want to end up in a school that I would be hassled just for being gay. Are there a lot of gay kids there? Any at all?

what is the acceptance rate for EA/ED?

what are the typical stats of scholarship recipients?

Takeheart, www.princetonreview.com has Wake Forest ranked as one of the top 20 schools where "alternative lifestyles are not an alternative." However, I'm pretty sure that means that there are few people who are (openly) gay there; I certainly haven't heard a thing about gays being hassled or anything.
