I'm writing to verify this answer. There has been a disagreement on which was the correct answer. The answer had something to do with Iraq, and I think D was the only one with parrallel structure, but many people said A. What was it?

no i think the difference was the tenses - A had present tense and D had past tense, so A implied as a result of the conference, she helped rebuild Iraq, and D implied that she did that and that was what enabled her to go to th conference...

I think I went with D....

I remember putting an answer using the verb "to have." Having helped...or something.

I put D, because it implies something done in the past, and it was parallel.

Yeah, that was the type of problem where I really get angry at ETS/ collegeboard. ALL of the choices sounded terrible. I think I left it blank

I'm hoping it was D too, d3!ty. The relevant parts of the question:

Choice A: ______ participated _________________, helping to rebuild Iraq and also advising that country's new president (or prime minister... whatever)

Choice D: ______ participated __________________, having helped rebuild Iraq and also advised that country's new president.

I think that was it. I wish I hadn't been so schwacked when I was almost through with the test. I went with choice D.

hmm... i think I put A... I dont remember D having the parallel structure that A had... plus everythine else in A was structurally sound.

Wasn't this the one with "Being that" and "Because?"

Amen. The writing section is somewhat stupid. Often all of the possible answers to a question sound terrible; a good writer would completely rework the sentence.

Is choice D acceptable when it comes to tenses? Is it correct to say "participated" and then "having helped and advised"?

s'vrone you have a good memory.

having helped matches also advised

yes it is acceptable to say "participated" and then "having helped and advised", as it implies that because she helped and advised Iraq and its Pres., she "participated" in the conference (as in that was her qualification)

"Often all of the possible answers to a question sound terrible; a good writer would completely rework the sentence."

I feel that way a lot! And then I get really mad when the way I would change the sentence is NOT one of the answers...gahhhh

i put a...i also don't think that choice d had that parallel strucutre...but then again i was so fatigued by the end lol so i might not have noticed it

This question sucks. I wish the College Board would throw it out or at least make the writing curve reasonable.
