How bad is it having a "W" on your transcript? compared to an F and what not ??

I heard from a Cal Adcom who said that having W’s shouldn’t hurt the application at all and are not a factor in the GPA or unit count. F’s are definitely worse.

I’d rather even have a W than a B on my transcript.

hahaha yes… i feel better that im gonna withdraw this chemistry class that I have a C in no way i can get a B or anything else =( teacher is impossible with giving full credit on essays. THANKS

1 or 2 W’s are tolerable on your transcript. In my opinion, it is far better than getting an C, D, or F in a class.

I wish I knew earlier that W’s aren’t a big deal. It would probably bump up my GPA by at least 0.1 points.

All I have to say is 99.99% of the time it doesn’t matter. Be careful of that .01% though.

Here’s some information I got when I sent an email to one of the transfer center advisors @ UCB. It might help, and it might not help lol.

Generally, if you have one “W” on your transcript, it is not going to be the reason that you are not admitted to UC Berkeley. The Admissions Office will do a comprehensive review of your application to see if you have at least 60 UC transferable units completed by the end of Spring 2010. They will also want to see that you have completed the general education requirements for your college, as well as your major requirements. Then they will look at your GPA and the pattern of your grades at college, as well as your employment history and the extra-curricular activities in which you are participating.

Considering all of the information they are looking at, having one “W” is usually not going to be a problem for you. Having said that, if you feel you need to explain the “W”, then go ahead and say something about it in your personal statement so that the readers have a better understanding of why you have the “W”.

hmphhhh which prompt would I discuss that problem in ? I cant seem to figure out which prompt to discuss academic problems …

Prompt #1 (transfer applicants)

What is your intended major? Discuss how your interest in the subject developed and describe any experience you have had in the field such as volunteer work, internships and employment, participation in student organizations and activities and what you have gained from your involvement.
Prompt #2 (all applicants)

Tell us about a personal quality, talent, accomplishment, contribution or experience that is important to you. What about this quality or accomplishment makes you proud and how does it relate to the person you are?

Prompt #3 - the additional comments section.

thanks mannn I didn’t know you can do the which additional comment part.

You’re welcome. Yes, it is called ‘Personal Statement, Part 3’ in the application.

i transferred to cal last year and had a W in some summer session i took. it’s no big deal really. it probably only looks a little dumb if the W was in a class related to your major.

lol ah damm what if my major happens to bio science and the class being dropped is chemistry? LOL

When are you planning on retaking the course?

well its the chemistry course to get into o-chem, but anyway I am retaking it most likely next spring…
