The Wait List Call

I'm just curious. At about what time do schools usually call the students they are looking to admit off of the wait list? I get so paranoid every time the home phone rings. :(

Never? At many if not most schools, wait lists are exercises in placating parents & donors, as well as not discouraging future applicants. At your HS you may be known as someone who got waitlisted at A, B, and C; kids with similar stats are going to be far more willing to apply to them than if they knew you were rejected at them. Thousands of kids are put on waitlists at some schools, but only a handful are taken.

I suggest calling your school(s) and asking how many kids are on the waitlist, and how many they’ve taken from it in the past 3 years.

I’ve heard that some kids have already gotten in off the wait list. My friend last year got in to Emory about a week after he sent in his letter of interest. But yeah, I’ll contact them and ask.

nonie: schools will be working their waitlists until August or beyond. You should really move on with life. When and if the call comes, they’ll know how to reach you.

They will call/email you or GC. Some people may hear end of April, but most likely after May 1. My D1 was done the first week. One called her GC, and another emailed her late at night. Both of them gave us very little time to decide. My sense is they were just working down the short list.

I’m not familiar with the acronyms lol. What’s D1 and GC? But thanks for the information. How recent was this?

D1 = Daughter #1
GC = guidance counselor (college counselor)

This info is two years old, not much has changed, except this year schools may have to reach deeper into their WL (waitlist)

Rarely would any college admit students off the waitlist before the date that accepted students have to claim their spot in the class (May 1st for most schools). After that, you could be notified any time before their school year starts.
