The Wait list Versus Acceptance Math

Does Rice only send out 940 acceptances to match the open spaces they have for 2014, or do they do like an airlines selling tickets and send out "940 + XXX" acceptances, knowing that they will have some cancels?

If not, do they only send out 940 acceptances and wait list the quantity they think they may need to fill the spots from the 940 that aren't used first first round?

Just interested in how they operate. Thanks in advance for your input.

P.S. Anyone have any idea how many students were wait listed?

Two years ago Rice accepted 2,255 people. They assume a yield rate of somewhere around 35%, although the yield rate has been rising every year for the past few years.

Last year only architecture students were accepted off of the waitlist, because architecture is a program with a fixed number of slots, and the initial yield was apparently lower than anticipated.

Thanks for the input, NY Skins. I thought it would be similar to a plane ticket as far as Rice making an “educated guess” as to their acceptance rate.

Guess we better not count on the wait list coming through for my son and start getting the housing requests in for his safety school, the University of Michigan.
