The Wait List

Bad news for 9th grade boarding girls waiting for Westminster. They aren’t going to Waitlist !

I just called St. Andrew’s and they are probably not going to wait list. Hotchkiss doesn’t know yet; they are still awaiting a lot of responses. Didn’t get through to anyone at Mercersburg, left a message. Taft already emailed a negative.

@moreACubMom This is an interesting comment from Thacher. Either they they did an excellent job calculating their yield or the AO is not being entirely truthful. I was at a BS revisit day and was discussing BS decisions with other parents. Her son had been accepted to Thacher, Andover, Exeter and Peddie etc. and she said that they had cancelled their revisit day at Thacher. They were not really informed about the school because other kids were talking about Cate and she thought this was the school in CA that offered her son admission. When she talked about the horseback riding program I informed her she meant Thacher. She informed me that her son had already turned down the admission offer but the AO who reviewed his application had become angry at him. From my revisit day, I spoke with several families whose children were declining offers of admission to CA schools because they were getting cold feet about traveling so far.

I mean, being the uncynical person that I am, I’d have to go with the first option.

AO’s are usually good at this sort of thing, it’s what they’re paid to do.

I don’t think it is cynical to think that AOs are human and have gotten yield calculations wrong in the past. I also wonder what kind of answer you would get if you informed the AO you were FP vs FA. My clinical side is tempted to call the schools on my kids wait list/wait pool and ask them if there is room for my kid as a FP. I may be tempted but could not be bothered.

I think it’s cynical to believe that AO’s are being untruthful about this kind of thing.

And AO’s are good at what they do. They might get it wrong, but this happens less often than not.

I am inclined to believe Thacher as they have a such small class they are trying to fill. Plus they have such a unique offering that families are either “all in” or probably wouldn’t apply in first place. We were sort of naive about this during the application season, but when we calculate the numbers of spots for my child’s profile (9th grade girl in-state), there were literally only 13-15 spots total at Thacher!

I don’t know about Exeter in particular, but there are plenty of schools who do in fact have hundreds of kids on wati lists. Last year, the waitlists for both Deerfield and St. Pauls were over 700 kids each. It’s not that they don’t have a pretty good handle on what their yield is likely to be (Deerfield’s is just over 50% year in and year out), it’s that they want to give themselves lots of options if they do need to go to the waitlist (day vs. boarding, boy vs. girl, sports, etc). But also some of these schools have an approach that suggests that they often use the waitlist as a “soft” no, especially where alum or sibling applicants are involved.

700!? That is FAR above the number I would have expected.

I’m sure Thacher’s is lower, due to the very small amount of spots they have there.

@twinsmama I got the same thing from SAS. Sigh.

So will ALL the schools be sending out hundreds of updates on the waiting list today?

@moreACubMom I used that family to illustrate how little they knew about Thacher. They knew the school was located in CA but did not know it was the school with equestrian program. This boy was accepted but I believe his application to Thacher was driven more by a shotgun approach. “Let me apply to all the top schools”. I was surprised by the number of people who applied based only on reputation. I do not know how big the wait list are but if you look at this site, it appears many kids are placed in wait pool/wait list. If the lists are small than most of the kids/parents placed on the wait lists post on CC. It would also seem that if the lists are small than a school like Loomis will be going to the wait list because just a cursory review of OP comments indicates that this is the school that most of CC applicants are turning down.

@BigBird18 - I’d give schools more time to shake out. Today is the deadline so I would expect AO’s (at most schools) to wait a little while longer until everything is in. The most WL movement (I’ve seen) usually occurs during the last two weeks in April and sometimes when the first big tuition payment is due in July… but every year (and school obviously) is different . I’ve heard of kids getting off the WL in May, June and August and September, too… So unless you get a curt WL Is Closed letter or have a pointed conversation w/an AO regarding your child, I would still remain somewhat hopeful… but guarded. You just never know…

St. Paul’s has opened their WL. We know of one girl who was taken off today.

@stargirl3, Too bad. Now I know for sure that you and my daughter won’t go to the same high school. She wanted to meet you!

@twinsmama And I want to meet her!

But we could end up together if we both apply again! xD

Thank you @photographermom I am actually a kid and my parents have been in contact with the AO’s and I have been in contact with coaches and email my interviewer with any updates. We’ll see.
@NHMomof3 that’s the kind of information that makes me happy! thank you!!!

My daughter got of Waitlist from Pomfret with FA. Woohoo

@Momof5ct YAY! Happy Happy news for you and your daughter. Not to be self-centered, but I feel like your good news gives me hope.

Did they call? Email? both? I assume this happened today and just recently.
