The Wait List

@CroissantMiser The varying response may be due to a better than usual yield at LC this year. It seemed to me that many of the OPs on CC were declining LC for Exeter etc. I do know of one local who declined Cate despite better FA for LC. The OPs here may just skew a certain way. If someone here is a current LC student and knows the yield for LC then they could inform the rest of us. I do not think I have seen any post from a current student about LC’s yield.

I’m not sure what their actual yield was, but the numbers I could find and the projections looked like this:

1,800 applicants - record number - up from 1,600
Projected jump to 25% acceptance down from 28%
Projected continuation of a constant yield of around 45%

Again, these are projected, but they are LC’s own numbers.

i understand everything being said; however, my issue is consistent communication, not higher yield, etc. The bottom line is that any AO at Loomis or any other school can access the admissions dashboard and tell us how many kids are on the WL; how many need FA and what the prospects are going forward. there’s no excuse for not providing this info to candidates and for every AO at the school to provide the same, accurate information.

^^where are you getting your numbers? Are these on the LC web site for 2014? Just wondering because I am not sure that all schools have released them. I just recall another OP stating that during assembly at Cate the AO stated X number applied and Y admitted. Did not mention yield.

It actually doesn’t really depend on whether there are x number of kids or y number of kids on the waitlist- it depends who rejects the school. There are pockets of kids to fill every spot (URM, legacy, athlete, etc), not a numbered list of kids.

And I got my info here: http://www.lclog.org/en/21/news/270/Record-1800-applications-received.htm.

this article is from 2012 FYI…but again, this is about accurate, consistent information flow to those kids on the WL and why Loomis AO’s are providing different information to WL applicants. There’s no reason that we should not be privy to the number of kids wait listed in our specific categories.

Oh, I apologize. I specified 2014 in my search, so I forgot to look at the actual article.

This may be information that AO’s keep close to their breast. They may not want to be obvious that they will favor FP over FA on the WL. All BS want to pump their numbers up so they appear more selective. Colleges have been caught doing this just so they can move up the list of US News and World Report. Their main goal is to attract more competitive applicants especially FP applicants.

Has anyone heard from St. Paul’s?

again, all i’m asking for is consistent information to be communicated by AO’s to all those still on the WL…it’s not that hard people…I just think it shows a total lack of respect for the applicants when applicants speak to their respective AO’s at Loomis and then post completely different sets of answers to the same WL question/category. That’s not about protection or yield or Ivy league matriculation or any lists…that’s about common decency and respect for those kids who poured their hearts and souls into this application process and want to know where they stand, and by that i don’t mean yes or no, i mean a simple answer to “how many 9th grade boarding boys/girls are currently still on your waitlist?”

I am very sorry about your experience. Maybe you could PM one of the OP who posted their different response from their AO. I recall someone posting that there was no longer anymore FA at LC. There was no source attribution. Maybe someone on this list who has actually heard about the LC WL could contact you.

I agree with the inconsistent messaging theme from the Loomis office. After April 10, why allow someone to be granted a fee waiver if there is no more FA available? If you are being granted a fee waiver, I think that means you need FA. Why would Loomis allow this to happen?

Oh well. I actually think applying is fun.

I don’t begrudge anyone from attempting to do what they can to gain admission either now or earlier, what I’m upset about is a lack of consistent messaging from the Admissions Office to those still on the WL. Just give us the facts, that’s all…they are right there at your fingertips.

LC is not the only admission office that needs to get it together. I posted a thread about our experience with one school under application nightmare. My child had initially wanted to remain in the wait pool for this BS. While my kid’s first response was keep me In the pool I convinced this kid to remove their name. My child sent the email last week asking to be removed and received a confirmation from the director of admissions. So what comes in the mail today? Thanks for your continued interest in our school blah, blah. We have no more interest in the school and you acknowledged this. What a waste of paper and postage.

Who cares? They have those papers in stacks. Let them do what they want.

Before we just completely go bashing the schools and their admissions offices here, let’s stop and consider a grade school adage. We’re not in their shoes, so we can’t possibly know what it feels like. We went through the stress of the app process and the fun of picking our school. For AOs, they experience it the other way around. Imagine how mad we would be if people completely criticized and attacked us for each of the probably many mistakes we made throughout the app process.

Furthermore, we are not looking at the entire picture. For all we know, Loomis could actually be giving us more accurate information. Maybe they weren’t willing to give any more FA to day kids but would for boarders. Maybe the chances are grim for 9th grade but better for 11th grade. We can’t even begin to see the whole picture, so I don’t think it’s our place to sit and tear AOs to threads.

Additionally, different AOs might have different views or information- there’s no way they’re constantly in meetings keeping each other up to date with the amount of aid being given out. And, for all we know, the amount of aid changes from day to day- someone denying their acceptance, another full pay accepting, full aid being dropped in, etc.

Whether or not a school has their admissions office in order shouldn’t really make or break the school for you. If you need your kid to be admitted, call and ask to speak to the admissions director or send an email. He’ll have better information than most of the officers. Being swamped with applications and constantly being called by anxious parents can’t be fun- let them do their job and wait for the chips to fall where they might.

Please consider the fact that all of you have acceptances in hand. Many of the posts are from applicants/parents of applicants with only wait lists and no acceptances. You could also walk a mile in their shoes.

No complaints here…I’m just glad to know that they are still working on it and that my daughter still has a chance. Admissions is a job I would not want. :-)
