<p>Anyone have any idea how many people Amherst accepts off the waiting list? I’ve heard conflicting numbers. Someone said that the Common Data Set indicates a close to 0% chance over the past few years, whereas someone else said something like 25 were admitted off the list last year. Anyone know the numbers?</p>

<p>In other words, in the old days kids only applied to 5 or 6 schools and now they’re applying to more than 10 which means more refusals of acceptance, no?</p>

<p>Please read the first paragraph. You’ll see that the 2007-2008 admission cycle was arbitrary and unpredictable on account of a number of major factors, which include the end of Harvard and Princeton’s Early Action programs, and also the complete revamping of the financial aid policies of Harvard in December 2007 and its peers soon afterward.</p>
<p>I don’t believe that the Common App will change the playing field because it’s been here for quite a while. However, the joining of certain rival schools to the Common App–particularly Chicago and more recently Columbia–will have to be taken into account by the admission committee.</p>
<p>The people at the office know what they’re doing because they’ve been doing it for a long time. I’m not concerned that they’ll hit another sort of unexpected bump along the road.</p>
<p>I would like to point out that Amherst takes a certain number of students from 2 year colleges as transfers every year, Kwu might have the numbers…Just another way to spent SOME time at Amherst…</p>
<p>so i’m assuming we should send in the typical wait list supplementary things (LOCI, updated transcripts, recent accomplishments, etc)? any other recommendations?</p>

I was waitlisted at Amherst this year, and my counselor called and talked to the admissions officer for the waitlist who said that this year they were expecting to accept0-15 students, and that to be considered I would have to send a letter that says if I were to be admitted I would DEFINITELY attend, like an Early Decision agreement. Hope this helps!</p>
<p>In response to why the waitlist is so much smaller, perhaps they’re doing what other colleges are doing, and reducing the waitlist because they know they won’t make that many offers? I know I just read an article about other schools doing the same thing. UVA, for example, reduced its waitlist by 25% because it had more apps this year and the president wanted the students to be able to “move on” since admittance was unlikely.</p>

<p>There’s the recent Times article about Dook having waitlisted 3,382 applicants, nearly two times the size of their incoming freshman class. MIT, Yale, and Dartmouth have followed suit, waitlisting more students than ever before.</p>
<p>It’s pointless and cruel to torture so many kids needlessly, and it’s a good thing that a handful of colleges have cut down on its use.</p>
<p>Considering that about 71% of Amherst applicants were outright rejected, I feel a little better about my waitlist :). I didn’t accept my spot though.</p>
<p>Any updates? Things have started getting active at other wait list threads so I thought I’d check in.</p>
<p>Don’t hesitate to call the Office of Admission. It’ll take you a few minutes, and relieve a lot of stress.</p>
<p>Just to set the record straight - I know it’s wayyy later, but i thought i’d post that i got an email saying that admissions was not taking anyone off the waiting list this year (which was odd, considering that i didn’t accept a place, but oh well). It implied that they had slightly overenrolled, or were just right.</p>
<p>Maybe the waitlist is done and over with. But most of you never received that email due to email server issues. </p>
<p>Call and ask them what’s happening. You may have been dragged on for too long because of this.</p>
