Barnard’s my first choice and I have been waitlisted. I am an international student who needs significant financial aid. Does anyone have any idea if there’s hope for me?

exact same situation here… i guess we can’t do anything but to wait and see…

Barnard has the following statement on their financial aid page:

Most of the financial aid provided by Barnard is from Federal funds and is of course reserved for citizens of the US.

Hello my fellow waitlisted people! I don’t have much hope forgetting off the waitlist and will instead be heading to Amherst in the fall unless I have a sudden change of heart and Barnard accepts me off the waitlist.

Good luck!

I’m a transfer student hoping to go to Barnard, but I received some wait list wisdom during my first college search…if you’re waitlisted it’s really important to let the admissions office know that if they take you off the waitlist you would go.
Best of luck to all of you :-)

i might kick myself for asking…but are there any stats about the waitlist?

iamthinking – if you need substantial financial aid, I seriously suggest that you move on. I know that you love Barnard, but colleges generally are not need-blind when it comes to their waitlist. Given financial realities and the fact that Barnard only offers financial aid to a handful of international applicants, I don’t think that it is realistic for you.

The economic downturn in the US really hits financial aid departments at small college like Barnard hard (and at larger colleges as well). Not only is their own endowment and donor base reduced, but both incoming and continuing students are showing up with higher need. Since Barnard does commit to meeting full need of its domestic students, the financial aid budget is probably stretched to the max.

I don’t want to be the bearer of bad news – but this is the reality. The waitlist is not a good place for students who need a lot of financial aid to be. Before going to the waitlist, the ad com will get a report back from financial aid as to the budget – if they are told that there is no more money left, then they will look to fill spots with full pay students.

Any idea when we’ll know the wait list results? I’ve already heard of colleges who have notified some wait listed students. I know they said a couple of weeks in, but apparently they might tell us sooner?

I know of two girls who were notified today (Friday) via telephone that they have been admitted from the waitlist!

My daughter, an “international” student (US citizen studying abroad), was called this morning and offered a spot which she is accepting. They had tried reaching her yesterday by phone without success and had sent an email letting her know they will be calling this morning.

Congrats to your daughter!

I’d just note for purposes of clarity that my remarks about financial aid and international students would not apply to a US Citizen – I think that Barnard would apply the same need-based standards to your daughter as anyone else – (but of course we don’t know from your post whether you need or qualify for such aid in any case).

I do feel that Barnard highly values a diverse student body, including students with international living experiences. I am sure your daughter will find Barnard to be a stimulating and academically rewarding environment.

My congrats as well, happyparent!!! I wish you and your d the best in her experience at Barnard!
