Thanks for clarifying that one, quaere.I’m a bit reassured. My concerns were raised after I read something on the interwebs that said Oberlin students were “pot smoking hipsters” that are “nonchalant about everything” and are on a “four year holiday on daddy’s bread”.That’s a very worrying statement, naturally.

When you see a description like that, check out the poster’s other posts. You will probably find that the person is conservative and you can determine that they probably know that Oberlin is liberal, and they are just spouting their prejudices about liberals.

Just got off the Oberlin waitlist!

Total nonsense. I agree with Inquisitive Mom. Some right winger posted that lunacy. But I’ve read much worse and just laugh about it, because none of it is true. There are pot smoking hipsters on 98% of the college campuses in America. My D has met exactly one pot-smoking hipster at Oberlin in two years. Most people don’t even smoke regular cigarettes let alone pot. And like my D and her boyfriend, also an Obie whom she met at school, most people they know don’t even drink alcohol (and, no, they aren’t religious either). I find Oberlin to be basically mainstream, even “square” by comparison to some other colleges. I’m serious.

As far as “non-chalant” and taking a “four year holiday on daddy’s bread,” as a Daddy, I just look at my D’s grades. Yes, she not only shows them to me, she gives me access via PRESTO to look 'em up on my own, if I want. She’s rightfully proud of her hard work and the seriousness with which she and her classmates regard the learning experience offered by Oberlin. No nonchalant, four-year holiday in her grades. :)

Congrats Maccassar!

Got off the waitlist a couple hours ago! Still waiting on financial aid

Son has decided on Oberlin, in spite of less financial aid. Oxy offered full tuition (40K), Oberlin offering 23K. The full tab is 58K a year. How do everyone else’s offers compare?

Wow,that seems to be a great discrepancy. Was the aid at Oxy merit based?Perhaps he could appeal the aid decision if it’s financially straining.

I think that Oxy really wanted him–he was more of a catch for them, whereas at Oberlin he came off the wait list. I think Oxy is trying to attract more East Coast students with his kind of profile (solid academic achiever, athletic (#1 varsity tennis player), musician (jazz drummer & composer). Oberlin probably has no problem attracting this type of East Coast student:)
