The Weekend

So while I'm sure we all love a good party, they must get old after awhile. What do people at Notre Dame do on their weekends besides get drunk? It's something that makes me consider going to a school out east. Is drinking is the only thing to do on Friday and Saturday night? Does everyone do it? What do you do if you don't want to get drunk?

One of the nasty little secrets that people on here know is that I don't drink, so there better be something! There is a group that has activities every weekend for those who do not want to drink, so that is an option. There are also movies on-campus every weekend and usually a few dorms are having dances. I like to hang out with my friends, go to sporting events, get caught up on my work (if I need it, which usually I do) and go to lectures. One of the things people don't take advantage of is that we get awesome visiting lecturers because a lot of scholars come here for sabbatical due to our awesome library. Due to this, we have some of the best scholars from around the world lecturing. Lastly, ND has a lot of conferences. I was actually at ND's pro-life conference this weekend!

So, I hope that gives you a sense. Yes, there is more to do than just drink!

If you're into computer games, we have a 200mbit connection here. For the unitiated, that's roughly 20 times faster than your standard cable connection. Also, I watch movies with friends, play pool, go to concerts, etc. ND is very conscious of the fact that South Bend doesn't have too much to offer, so they make sure that there's plenty to do besides drink on the weekends.

South Bend is pretty boring, but Notre Dame has a lot to offer. That is actually one of the reasons why I came here. The other schools I was considering seemed to totally revolve around partying and drinking, whereas Notre Dame has a lot of other things to offer. I do go out and party on occasion, but the majority of the time I spend my weekends sober. This past weekend, I went to my dorm's SYR dance and had a House marathon in my room. There are always things like SUB movies, plays, the opera, music performances, and conferences going on. Flipside usually plans activities like roller skating, bowling, etc. There are also a lot of athletic events to attend, it you enjoy that. You should have no problem finding non-alcoholic entertainment at Notre Dame.
