I'm trying to decide whether I should ask a certain LTG for a recommendation letter for west point. I know him fairly well and he also attended my eagle scout ceremony a few years back. He is a former usma graduate also... I know that he is extremely busy, so if the letters are weighted in a mediocre fashion, I won't waste my time doing it. Thanks..

Use him for your MOC nomination recommendations.
The application last year asked specifically for 11th grade Math and Science teachers, although I think you could use him as an additional recommendation - check with your admissions officer.

"if the letters are weighted in a mediocre fashion, I won't waste my time doing it."
For WP admissions additional character recommendation letters do not outweigh the required school official evaluations, but can be used as a supplement. (ie a good character reference does not mitigate a poor academic reference, but can help boost other good references from your teachers.)

oh no, are you sure it has to be 11th grade math teacher? My math teacher this past year was the devil, and it showed on my grades. I pulled off like a C for the year. Does it have to be the 11th grade one?

We Share Atop's concern. Daughter's AP Calc BC was a terrible teacher and not a nice person to boot. She got a B in that class (first B since 1st semester freshman year) and found out through his student helper that all of his letters of recommendation had only 3 lines and they all said exactly the same thing. The weird part is she earned a 5 on the AP Calc BC test which raises the question did she slack in class or what? Truth is the teacher assigned tests/homework on material that he did not cover. Very few did well in the class. Anyway, how does one handle that situation? Im sure Atop and my daughter are not the only candidates faced with it.

Your daughter can always discuss the situation with her WP admissions Regional Commander if you think it may be an issue. The 5 on the AP BC Calc exam will help.

Lucky you got that 5 on that AP. I have no such luck, is there anything I could do to my 11th grade math teacher? Like asking the teacher I had for both 9th and 10th grade?

Call admissions and ask if you need to use your 11th grade teacher (or wait and see what the instructions say). I know that the subject is specified but I'm not sure that the academic year is. My son used his 9th grade physics teacher for his science recommendation.

Thanks for the tips. She can also probably bring this up with her counselor and she can make a note in the file or something. Unfortunately, she has no other option but to take this same teacher in 12th grade for AP Stat!!

One parent suggested she use the 10th grade teacher for her letter or rec becasue she technically took the 11th grade math class in 10th grade. Maybe you can apply this strategy, atop.

True, but I read a thread about how one candidate was plagued by one bad recommendation letter. I think it said he had an LOA and everything, but a bad recommendation. He was not given a slot and he said that WP keeps recommendation letters when you apply again. So they basically keep that bad letter.
