Hey guys! First post in the College Essay forum!

Ok, I'm starting my college essays, and most of my colleges require the "Why?" essay. I have been racking my brains with ideas to make this essay display something about me and my interest rather than just telling a college stuff it already knows. My current top chioces are UChicago, Rice, Cornell, and Carnegie Mellon among many others.

Where do I begin?

I have a couple of those also. What I did was researched the programs and facilities of each college and said why they were important to me (and consequently why I fit at that college)

When I wrote my "why" essays this past year I, like collegebound007, talked about the programs and facilities of the colleges I was interested in. At the same time, however, I also talked about the overall atmosphere of the schools I was looking at and how the atmospheres were a good fit for me and thus made me a good fit for the school.

I love writing those essays! They were pretty fun. For my essay, I researched the departments, facilities, and programs that I was interested in in my college and talked about how they were a good fit for me. Discussing the atmosphere of the college is also very important because it shows them what you are really like and how you would contribute/fit in the college. I also talked about my hopes and how a Cornell, UChicago, whatever education will help me later on in the future.

I struggled with my "why" essays too. I suggest talking to a friend or parent about all the colleges your going to and tell them why you chose each paticular one. This helped me. You may even realize that you don't know why you picked a college and in which case, you can research the school more or cross it off your list.
