I am in need of seeking information about The Winchendon School,MA . I know that basic information that is on the web, but I am looking for insights from people who have daughters at the school or from people who are or have been students at the school. I am interested in hearing your thoughts.
I really appreciate for your help.

I do not know alot about the school except that a friend of ours had a son who went there for only one year as a PG on FA. They take many international students and offer FA to internationals if you have a good hook - something you excel in. Academics are alright. sorry I can not help more.

Winchendon is a great school for students with special needs or those who aren’t achieving in a traditional school. If you have a daughter, I strongly recommend asking how many girls are enrolled. It is mostly boys. I had a student there who left in the middle of the year because she was one of only about 20 girls about several hundred boys. I know they have increased their girls enrollment, but not sure by how many.

what other schools are you considering?

Thanks newyorker22 and cdnhockeymom very much!
I really appreciate for your comment about school!
Actually, I am a girl and when searching again about school again, I just notice about the number of girls and boys. In 2005, there were 45 girls boarding and 155 boys boarding. It is so surprised.
I really want to know more about the academics of school? SAT preparation? College counseling?
Hei, newyorker22. I am considering Foxcroft Academy and Shattuck St’ Mary. Do you have any info of those school? Thank you very much for replying me.

Amazing men’s varsity basketball team…and that is all I know!

Foxcroft is the best of those schools academicallly. Winchendon is really focused on special needs, classes of 2 or 3 kids, just trying to get the kids up to speed academically. Shattuck would be a good second choice.

How did you find these schools? Are you just starting the application process now?

I also started now I have to wait FA. That makes me crazy. I am very worried.

Newyorker, that is so different than what we had heard from our friend who’s son went to Winchendon! I mean he was not a rocket scientist or anything but he had previously gone to a respected private school before going there for PG year. He certainly was not a special needs kid…do they perhaps have 2 streams?

I know they added a few more girls this year as they added a girls hockey team (and they did pretty well - there seems to be a bit of a sports focus there). My daughter has met both of the goalies (it is a small goalie world). Not tier 1 students, but not necessarily remedial students either. One was a french Canadian and the other did have a speech issue IIRC, but nothing that you wouldn’t find in a typical classroom anywhere.

I do understand though that it is a second chance school for some who have struggled elsewhere, but boarding schools by and large are meant to tailor themselves to the needs of their students as opposed to the one-size-misfits-all model of the public school.

cdn hockey mom,
Winchendon isn’t just for special needs, but their mission is clearly on students who aren’t succeeding elsewhere. That is their niche and they do a good job, with small classes and a lot of one-on-one. This is even on their website pretty clearly. I can’t speak for your friend or why he went there, but hopefully it was worthwhile for him.

Went rafting with a crew from Winchendon a few years ago. To a one the students did not know right from left. Very challenging for the guide.

That’s because, when one is boating, it is starboard and port.
