The thing is, THE wants to do a world university ranking, and a great many world universities do not teach business, law, medicine, theater, fine arts, music, or various other topics. Even in the UK, where the universities are generally similar to what we have, universities don’t address those subjects.

Why is Brown ranked so low? 52?

I’m not a Brown student or alum btw

The rankings are flawed guys. They are inclined towards schools that have very high research activities. That’s why Caltech is No.1,after all thats where the Jet Propulsion Lab is.

If the University of Chicago isn’t really a university either, that’s OK with me. I continue to think it’s kind of nutty to call Caltech the “best university” when it has such limited offerings.

What is even more nutty is to call pretend the best university is solely based on its research prowess, dedication to direct spending to few, reward researchers over educators, and the volume and rate of publishing in mostly obscure and insiders’ journals. Oops, there is something nuttier, namely paying much attention to this ranking and pretending it is relevant to the life of undergraduate students.

It’s just another newspaper/magazine ranking. Just like Forbes. Just like US News & World Report. You take it or leave it.

If you don’t like where Caltech is on the full THE rankings, you may be more pleased with THE’s reputation ranking:
