The Worst College Campuses You Have Seen...

haha – did you get rejected by Northeastern? NEU has put a hell of a lot more resources and $$ into making a nice campus than BU has. It definitely shows, too.

i refused to get out of the car at brandeis. its too bad, cause im a big fan of the school.
binghamton depressed the hell out of me.

Yale has a pretty ugly campus compared to Princeton’s.

I find it odd the people that make negative comments about the campuses of NYU , BU, Northeastern, MIT, Harvard , Penn and so on…Please did you think there would be mountains, deer and the like across the college facilities.?

Most of these schools are in the middle of exciting, vibrant cities..with applicants and students striving for acceptance. This is based on academic excellence.

I have seen several of the schools with my two kids, and I cannot believe the response to any of them. People do no apply them with high hopes strictly based on the beauty of the campus.( which I would strongly disagree with )

Of course there is to each his own..but why look at an urban campus if you cannot handle that they are in cities ?

SUNY Stony Brook, Hopkins (I didnt love the campus and Baltimore just makes it worse), MIT, Harvard to some extent

You couldnt’ve paid me to apply to Northeastern…

And yes, it definitely does show as BU doesnt put money into the campus as it has none…

Ugh, ditto to SUNY Stonybrook. That is the most depressing campus ever! And very windy there, moreso than it should be because of the way the buildings are set up.

I didn’t think Clark U was that bad. It isn’t stunning, but it isn’t ugly. It has a nice lawn with lots of trees.

I also liked the Harvard campus. I’m a sucker for old brick buildings though. Plus, the square was really cool and filled with students and activity flyers, etc., which connotes that happy and traditionally collegic atmosphere that I’ve always had in the back of my mind.

I know that everyone gushes about how gorgeous it is, but I didn’t like the Vassar campus. It was sort of like a castle, yeah, but it was like a CREEPY castle. Vassar has very gothic architecture that can be off-putting for someone looking for a more “homey” campus. The library is BEYOND BEAUTIFUL though. The inside is crazy! There is this whole stained glass thing going on, and the collection could make any avid reader drool.

oakland university was really bad.

It’s clear that the physical attrativeness of schools (like with everything else) is relative–some people are creeped out by gothic architecture, some people are bored by red brick, some people find modern glass-and-steel uninspiring. Some people like a predominant theme to the architecture, while others like a mixture. Some people like the architecture to blend in with the surrounding area, while others don’t care (U of Detroit has Spanish architecture!!!).

It’s also clear that the physical beauty/ugliness of a school doesn’t have much of an impact on some people, while others find it invigorating, soothing, depressing, whatever.

It’s a good thing we all have different tastes, otherwise everybody would want to go to the same schools.

Quite true, Tourguide. I for one (and apparently the only one in this thread) hated the Cornell campus. I went expecting to be wowed but found the mixture of architecture and layout very uncohesive and the “charm” of the gorges to be limited to a distant part of the campus. Most of all I was jarred by the sound of those buses shifting gears as they went through campus. To me it ruined the quiet and made the place feel like a city, but without the benefit of charming shops.

chacun a son goût.

Yes, The real NYU campus is New York City, which they have amazing campus.

While Boston is an exciting city, BU, MIT and Brandeis are super boring architecturally.

Ditto for NYU.

UMass Amherst is a hell hole.

I found Wesleyan underwhelming.

I guess you missed the SMG building because that’s something.

temple
10 char

Why? As I said, Temple’s campus isnt ugly at all.

how come nobody’s mentioned carnegie mellon? seriously Carnegie Mellon has the worst campus of all time.
ugly yellow brick buildings, ugly brokendown pittsburg and the sky always seems a melancholy grey

not a fan of Columbia… they tried really hard to stick a patch of grass enclosed by a rock fence in the middle of a city

Here’s some more on Texas Tech. A number of years ago, Sports Illustrated published a huge issue on college football and included such evaluations as “best band”, “best cheerleaders”, etc, etc . One item was “ugliest campus” and Texas Tech got the award. Of course, SI got a slew of letters from disgruntled Texas Texh supporters. In response, SI decided to revisit the matter of “ugliest campus” and, after it did that, stated once again that Texas Tech had the worst looking campus in the USA. It is hideous. Certainly there are places like Boston University that have a lot of buildings but no real cohesive campus feel, but, again, nothing can touch Texas Tecch for sheer ugliness.

I think we have pretty buildings :D

I’ll second ithacaiscold. Carnegie Mellon was an ugly campus. It isn’t helped by the fact that Pittsburgh is ugly, but even on its own, it’s just gross. Yellow brick is fine for me, but the campus has such a nice place where it could be a beautiful suburban-style university. Instead, it just seems like a hodgepodge with no connection at all.

Speaking of Pittsburgh schools, the University of Pittsburgh is even uglier.
