NYU blatantly states that they do not place nearly as much weight on the writing section as they do on reading and math. They do not have enough data yet. But they do say that a low writing will still hurt.
So, is the writing section less important? Is it still viewed with the importance level of a subject test? or is it up to par with the other sections now?

It depends on the college. In general, it will never be more important than the other two.

Duke and U of Notre Dame say that they completely disregard the writing section, but if it comes down to two kids with the same stats in everything else, they probably do look at it.

I think you are right about NYU. A friend I think got a pretty low writing compared to CR/math, won't say the total score but it was below 1900. The friend got in. I think it shouldn't be viewed with any difference. I in fact did better on W/M than CR.
