I've been accepted as a transfer student to UVA for Spring 2011 and I'm trying to make a final decision. I intend to major in Theater and Cognitive Science and I was wondering if anyone had any input about the quality of either or both of these departments.

I've also been told that because I'm fairly liberal, dress a little eccentrically, and am a definite independent, that I probably won't be happy at UVA- this seems absurd to me, but if anyone would like to weigh in, I'd appreciate the feedback.

To answer your second question, UVA is a pretty large school. There are over 13,000 undergrads here, so there’s a very wide variety of personalities and styles among the student body. It’s definitely true that there’s a sizable portion of the population that could be called “preppy,” but honestly there are so many different types of people here that you’re bound to find others with similar beliefs or fashion senses :)

Katetooley, look into Brown College, which seems to be full of artsy, geeky, and/or quirky sorts. My son, who is this kind of person, loves it there. I don’t know if you can live there in the spring, but they take upperclass applicants for the fall.

If you’re majoring in theater or even just getting involved in productions in the drama dept., you will meet lots of kids (and faculty) of your stripe.

Thanks for the feedback! This was more or less my instinct: I currently go to a VERY small town conservative college, and while it took a while, I’ve not had a problem finding others like me. I like to get as much feedback as possible- personality thing. I’ve been getting a good feeling from what interaction I have had with the theater department already. :)

Brown really looks like a fantastic option- I think that’s going to be my fall goal Thanks for the feedback about the people- it’s what I wanted to know.

If anyone has any thoughts on the CogSci dept. I’d love to hear them!

How did you end up liking UVA? I just got admitted into the school as a as a second year transfer for Fall 2011 and think I may be going there. I am very, very liberal, love theater and want to get involved while majoring in Cog Sci and Philosophy. How has your experience been so far?
