Theater at Boarding School

How are the theater programs at boarding school, specifically Andover and Choate?

I've never been in anything, so I'm a complete beginner.
So how hard is it to get parts? Is it fun to participate?

Thanks in advanced!

I go to Andover, and I love the theatre program here. This summer, we’re going on tour to Scotland. So excited!

Choate has a really really good theatre program from what I hear. I went to the Eight Schools Theatre Festival at Exeter two years ago, with a bunch of Choate kids as well. It seems that they have an amazing program. Last year’s festival was hosted at Choate, but unfortunately, I was unable to attend since I was in Washington D.C. that weekend. I heard it was great though.

Being a beginner is not a problem. There are both student and faculty run shows at Andover, with the faculty run ones being once a term and taken as a class for credit, and the student directed/produced ones usually going up about two a week. They’re tons of fun - I’ve acted in one and directed 3.

I expressed my specific interest of drama and participating in all sorts of plays and I got the cold shoulder from my interview rep. from Andover and Hotchkiss.

I babbled about my love of drama and he/she goes “ANYWAYS…” and goes on to another topic. I was literally -.-|.

Dungeonlurker- Thanks so much for answering! Does Andover do any musicals? From the website, it just seems like intense plays… Haha.

Jerryeps- I’m sorry! ): Yeah, I mentioned my interest in both interviews but it wasn’t discussed at all. I wasn’t surprised though. Without experience, they can’t tell if you’re good or not, so I guess they just want to know more about what you HAVE done, rather than what you imagine yourself doing.
