Theater at Northwestern

My daughter applied and just received a letter saying she did not make the first cut but would be reconsidered in April. WHat criteria do they focus on?

travellinghopefully, my daughter was accepted to the NHSI theater program two years ago. I had the impression the essays and recs were important as well as solid evidence of having been involved in theater to whatever extent possible given the student's situation.

Maybe it's worth sending in additional material if you have it. I know for college admissions they accept additional information for deferred applications. If nothing else it would demonstrate serious interest.

So my daughter got a -well you didn't make the first cut' letter from NHSI. We don't understand why. She has a great resume and wrote a good essay. Wonderful letters of recommendation. How much are grades and test scores a factor? Did any one you go with get in on the second round?

Travelling... my son was an NHSI "cherub" last summer. Grades are a huge factor in admission. The rumor floating around my son's high school last year was about a boy who had the lead in his school's musicals for two years, was heavily into community theatre, etc., but didn't get into NHSI because his grades weren't high enough. He was in the top 7% of his class, yet they supposedly told him it was primarily due to grades.

Seems hard to believe, but maybe if he goes to a large public school, the top 7% might not be as great as it sounds, I don't know. My son is in roughly the top 8%, but goes to a smaller college prep school.

Not sure of specifics, but I would suggest that if your daughter received her SAT or ACT scores yet and if they're good, fax them a copy. We did that at the last minute, long after the app had been in. Good luck... it's an amazing program.

How can I find out how much the noncredit dance classes offered through the theater department cost.

Gwendolyn, I may be mistaken, but I don't believe they cost any extra...they just count as a class (and is thus a part of your tuition).
