theater/choral groups - non major

My D loves participating in community musical theater productions as well as at her school. She also enjoys singing and had an interesting opportunity last summer to sing with an adult choir in cathedrals in Italy.

Are there student groups like this that she can participate in at Tulane if this is not her major? We're not finding either in the list of campus organizations or on the Newcomb Department of Music page for the non-theatre/vocal major.

I have a few thoughts here (when don’t I?). First, my understanding is that non-majors are more than welcome to participate in all theater productions at Tulane. Would majors get preference for parts? I would guess so, but I don’t know any of the history here. I only know that non-majors have been in previous productions and the department has stated on a few occasions that all are welcome.

Second, there are a variety of singing groups. For acapella there is Green Envy [Green Envy: Tulane’s Oldest A Cappella Group](http://www.tulane.edu/~greeneny/)

There are also a couple of choral groups, with plans for more if interest is high enough. Again, I think this is more talent based than major based, but you can write to Dr. Raybon and ask. [Tulane University - Liberal Arts - Music - Choral Program](http://tulane.edu/liberal-arts/music/choral-program.cfm)

Finally, there used to be a pop-rock group called, cleverly enough, The Tulanians which was kind of a Chicago/Blood Sweat & Tears/Earth Wind and Fire type of group in the sense that it combined brass/woodwind type of instrumentals with the vocals, and songs from those kinds of groups were in fact popular choices along with some cross-over country and other genres. The current director of the LBC and a very good sax player, Leland Bennett, ran the group for years, but it disbanded about 10 years ago. It was a huge time commitment. I am sure he would be open to discussing that and other opportunities with her. As I say, resurrecting something like The Tulanians would be a big commitment, and I don’t know how much he would be willing to advise on it (or if she would even be interested in that kind of thing), but at Tulane these things are definitely possible. I was in the group for two years and it was a really great time, with two major performances a year, travel to other universities and some high schools, and super friends.

I hope that helps. My experience is that once she starts talking to people, they will lead her to other people and potential outlets for her passion. Best of luck.

As always, fallen, you’re the best! Not having this kind of stuff was an immediate deal breaker at another school and when I couldn’t find anything about groups like this at Tulane I was surprised. So glad they exist. Thanks also for the links. I’ll pass along to her. The a cappella group is really great. I’m sure she will love to listen! Can’t wait for our visit!

When is your visit, nj_mom? If by the small chance you’ll be here next Wednesday or Thursday you should go to an a cappella concert: Green Envy is Wednesday night and THEM is Thursday!

tigerlily, I just saw that. They are awesome and we’d love to hear them live. Unfortunately, our visit is Tues/Wednesday with a flight out at 5:40pm Wed. :frowning:

Who is “THEM”?

THEM is another Tulane a cappella group http://tulanesthem.com/index.php</a>. There’s also a Tulane “barbershop quartet” style group called Fourte’.
I have one friend in THEM and one friend in Green Envy. so while not musical myself, I keep up to date  It’s a shame you can’t come to the concerts, but if you wanna see/hear all the songs from Green Envy’s winter concert you can just view their youtube channel: [YouTube - RedNo9’s Channel](http://www.youtube.com/user/RedNo9#p/a/u/1/JckD0tmy29s)
Have a great visit!

Tulane has a great theater group. Son went to a play recently for a class field trip.

We have many theater groups, professional, recreational, high schools, churches, and they are always looking for help.

Loyola, next door to Tulane, has an active theater department as well.

If you like theater, you can definitely find someplace to keep that interest alive in New Orleans.

Volunteer as a stage hand someplace, and you can surely get your foot in the door.

Good luck and have fun!

We visited Tulane last weekend with D for Honor’s events. D also loves singing and has been involved in theater and music in HS. We met a couple members of the music faculty and a music student at the Honors luncheon and they urged us to visit Dixon, the music building. While there, D met a voice teacher who spent probably 20 minutes out of her busy schedule discussing the program.

My husband, by accident, met the head of the music department. He set up a time to meet with D later that day. I was AMAZED at the man’s generosity and kindness. He spent probably 40 minutes with her and even (to her supreme shock) had her “audition” then and there. (Really, it was casual and nice, though I’m sure D was nervous when he told her he wanted to hear her sing!)

D got wonderful advice both from this gentleman and the other faculty she met. It is increasingly likely that Tulane is where she will choose to attend, and it will be in large measure because of this. She is now strongly considering double majoring, or at least minoring. Also, Tulane students can enroll in voice lessons even as a non-major/minor. I think your D will be pleased there!

WOW, frogmouth! That’s incredible! Can’t wait to share this with my D!

S2, though not a music major, is an outstanding jazz drummer who wants to play while at Tulane. The individual he spoke with from the music department was very encouraging and helpful. I don’t recall his name, but he was very nice and spent considerable time with S2 after the faculty/prospie lunch had officially ended. S2 found he could even earn fine arts credit from playing in a combo.
