@supergirlsmom Thank you so much! She is talented but I suspect she’s like all of our daughters, in that she really puts in the time. She also loves reading and history, so I’m not thinking, “Gee, will a BFA be just too much of this stuff?” I don’t think so—I think it’s the perfect path for her. She’s on spring break, at home making a petticoat for her prom dress right now. You probably know what I’m talking about.
The DePaul program looks amazing, @vogelpitts —and I have seen your posts about how happy your D is there! But my D fell in love with Rutgers, and even though DePaul is more affordable than most non-publics and offered a nice scholarship, Rutgers ends up costing less—plus we are in Maryland, so an easy distance away. Montclair State is even more of a bargain, with the in-state tuition, but it is still #2. Waiting for all financial blanks to be filled before hitting the “accept” button, though.
Overall, we were really impressed with the programs we visited. all different, but all seemed populated with happy and hard-working kids. Everywhere we went we also encountered caring and helpful faculty and staff, people who really went out of their way to help us or our daughter. Some of them “felt more right” to her. In addition to the NJ schools, she really liked VCU—Toni Leslie James is amazing. Penn State, too, seemed to have a great program, but their location was just a little too far from a metropolitan area. This last bit of waiting is taking its toll—on ME, anyway. If I could sew, I guess I could go make a petticoat!
Yep, you’ve got my D pegged just right! She is repurposing two thrift-store dresses for her prom dress. We are at home for a snow day today.
I felt the same way about the BFA v. BA but I have come to accept that some people learn better in a hands-on way than others, and I think if she can handle the workload, my D will happier with a BFA. She’s also very interested in continuing her studies in Latin of all things–she’ll need to find out if that’s an option. Some of the programs don’t allow a lot of flexibility.

@letterhead I completely understand. My daughter applied and got in to schools on both coasts. (Pace, Emerson, SUNY Purchase, CMU (waitlisted), CalArts and then midwest DePaul) We live in Colorado, and Chicago is just a tad bit closer. The scholarships helped as well but in the end the conservatory at DP won out. The BFA is a lot of work, especially in costume and costume tech. However, she loves it and enjoys having crews as well.
Our girls ( @supergirlsmom as well ) seem very similar in interests. Every school is so different in providing what you would want. Going with your gut on that decision is sometimes the very best thing. I’ve heard great things about Mason Gross! All of the schools that we toured we enjoyed as well however they all had their own vibe going. Good luck to you and finding out all of the financials. It definitely helps with the decision, but in the end it is always nice when the love of the school and the affordability can be one and the same.

New to CC and haven’t posted before but want to jump in now as D is fortunate to have a few choices to weigh and we will be seeking feedback on her acceptances in another conversation. So happy to have made it to this point. Congratulations to all who have worked so hard to make it this far.
Love the thrift stores, @supergirlsmom. Heading there with my daughter and her best friend Thursday. To me, it’s immeasurably better than heading to the mall!
@vogelpitts You give me hope that next year at this time, I could be kindly and sanely offering advice, finished with at least THIS particular type of stress!
