hcpss Congrats on your S acceptance! I was impressed with the BU info session. I actually liked their program more after hearing about it, and I think my D did also. She chose not to do DePaul because of the cut period. (It bothered her a lot and she knows that could happen!!) She is a realistic kinda artist. Somewhat anyhow! Good luck to all.

hcpss, kudos to your son on his acceptance to Shenandoah. Just to clarify, this is the thread that is devoted to kids auditioning for straight acting (not MT) programs; there is (as you no doubt know!) a huge number of threads/topics on the Musical Theater major thread yonder. :)

hcss and others: my son spent the summer at BU. He was very impressed with the many BFA students who were hanging out. Though they have an under the table - cut is not the word - recategorized - actually, more subtle than this word implies - the BFA students said that it is a solid, supporting community. My kid would go to BU overa anybody else, but that's him. Whether we are willing to pay the price is an issue we will confront if the time comes.
I hesitate to talk about DePaul publically. My son liked the audition part, but given his 'loose', creative being, he found his group to be a 'stick in the mud'. He worries that they brought him down. Did anyone see their play, which was staged at the Reskin during Chicago?
A number of my son's BUSTI friends got in ED. There were a number deferred because of grades; admissions does not admit marginal academic kids that the theatre program wants until ED. Poalo, etc. are neet people. Many were impressed with their intro. My S's sense was that this was authentic; its who they are.
t is an interesting to ponder whether DePaul's cut system is now out of touch, and counterproductive. I assume that faculty in the program discuss this policy; I would hope so, but some faculty do not talk to one another; there's lots of neurotic odd people who thrive. I was encouraged when I was told that kids accepted into the Theatre program have never denied tuition exchange. And eaul is a zero tuition (including study abroad) TE school.

Regarding NCSA-what's not to love if you are a serious acting BFA student?? The campus is beautiful-100% geared for the arts. The faculty is so amazing, all working professionals who are incredibly talented and renowned in their own right...(did anyone see Chancellor Mauceri conduct the orchestra at the Grammy's?) As a parent, I was awed at orientation by the faculty and department heads-very impressive!
As with any conservatory, it is live breath eat sleep(when you can) ACTING! SO if you are not serious about your art, don't consider it. The program is top rated for it's reputation in the acting world, and seeing firsthand with my daughter, I can certainly see why...
Regarding the acceptance of more boys than girls, I am not sure this is the norm, but from what I can ascertain, there are more boy roles in theatre than girl, so the acceptance percentage mirrors that fact. Just my observation.

Good luck

CMU apparently does the same (accepts more males than females), though not to the same extent as does NC Arts.

Brian: Regarding Depaul's play at the Reskin in Chicago - Are you are talking about the children's play that is currently up: A very Old Man with Enormous Wings? If anyone did see it I'd love to hear what they thought as I have not been able to make the trip to see it.

no; talking about a play with the name Thebes in it. my son saw it, but I did not. Perhaps it was not at the Reskin, though my S said it was.
Sorry, I am still a bit incoherent, so my above notes are hard for me to interpret. I am glad that I am not teaching something like statistics today. By the way, in my above comment about Profs, I was speaking generically, and not about DePaul faculty. I heard their introduction (in Reskin) and was very impressed.

Brian: Oh, yes - he must have seen The Burial at Thebes which was performed at the Reskin at night (the children's play was during the day). I know a young lady that was in it, and I happened to see her mother the other day who went to see the play. She said whereas of course she thought her daughter was wonderful :), the play itself was a little hard for her to follow as it somehow attempted to blend the classic tragedy storyline in with a storyline of Bush and the Iraq war which kinda went over her head - probably would have gone over mine as well!

thanks mamamia: my son and two kids who auditioned with DePaul were confused at the play. I liked the fact that their audition was 4 hours of varied activities. On the other hand, he is really into movement exercises and some of the others were 'shy;. But he was merely doing/acting free, as learned at BUSTI. My hope was that the faculty appreciated his imagination and leadertship/creative ventures, though he felt that others were a bit constrained.

Thanks Actingmom, for your impressions of NCSA. These types of observations are interesting to me.

I was wondering if anyone reading this has any impressions about Rutgers, CCM-drama, Ithaca-drama, Otterbein-drama--or any other drama (not MT) programs, for that matter. There seems to be much discussion about the MT programs--campus, "feel", curriculum, etc.-- on the MT thread, but not as much about acting/drama programs over here. It would be nice to hear from current students and parents of current students regarding what they like and dislike about their programs. Thanks!

There was a good posting about impressions of Rutgers. The guy got into a number of class A schools, but explained why he chose Rutgers. They were busy at Chicago, but I was surprised that were less mobbed than Purchase and Guthrie. Its a bit costly, given that (I think) they charge a higher tuition than their other undergrad programs. You were likely on their wen site. I was impressed by the success of many of their recent graduates. We consider it a 'far reach' program, but you never know. As I ssid to you, my son got the blad flu before unifieds. He did Otterbein first thing in the AM. Dr John gives good feedback on the spot. My zon felt that it was an off day. You've been to campus, so you know more about Otterbein than I do. On the MT thread, he said that they take few male acting students per year. Their nursing program is excellent, and I ran into a regular student there; she really liked the college. They do tach a lot of continuing ed adults, but full time students do not find this a distraction.

Hey guys. This is my first time posting, but I've been lurking for about 2 months now. I'm a HS senior who’s going (hoping) to study a BFA in acting.
Anyways... I've got a question. I have an audition tomorrow for BU, but there's supposed to be some pretty bad weather from both ends (I'm in Maine). If we're not able to make it, would they be able to possibly squeeze me in some other time, or would I have to send in a "special circumstances" tape? Or is there a possibility they might cancel the auditions for tomorrow and give us all an opportunity for a live audition?

Thanks for any help you can give.

My D. received her formal acceptance to Point Park for acting (with nice scholarship) and also accepted into College of Santa Fe for acting.
Waiting to hear from 8 more.

Duh Toad - Call them. I have called them for information and they are very helpful. I would call them tomorrow first thing. Possibly you could leave Friday if they say you need to be there?

Interesting about the different reactions to the auditions! My S was skeptical about DePaul and came out with a huge smile on his face. His audition at Purchase was a little strange - one of the adjudicaters asked him if he liked Jim Carey. When he said yes, they said "it shows." Now, that could be good, or bad, depending on their opinion of Jim Carey! Most people I have mentioned that to seem to think it is positive. I guess we'll know soon enough.

holly06, congrats to your D! Two acceptances!! That is wonderful. She already has two great choices and 8 more to hear from. She must be so happy and you must be so proud of her.
hcpss, those Purchase auditions are reportedly intense.

i got an acceptance letter from point park today with a scholarship as well! yay!

Congrats to you!! My D did not audition for them but I heard great things about their program. Way to go!!

hcpss: my son liked DePaul. But he felt nervous about how he came across relative to the small group he was assigned to. My S is kind of cutting edge, so when his good looking female partner (thought she was a bit full of herself, so he went along with what she wanted to do) - she wanted to do the typical HS flirtation/romanc scene, he was disappointed. His thought, why not do something that undercuts the everyday HS flirtation scene. I do not know if DePaul casted the couples according to type. She was the typical attractive blond. My S is good looking and athletic. He, however, wanted to show DePaul that he was more than face, pecks, and buns. His partner took offence when he challenged her ideas ( one of the S.Carolina Perf. HS types). I am not sure what DePaul concluded, or whether they watched the interpersonal dynamics.
Perhaps he should have gone with the situation that he was in. I, however, raised him to stand his ground. I admire his boldness, so if he did not come cross well, so be it.

NMR- thank you for the kind words. We are so proud of her. Both of those acceptances were on the spot in Chicago. I will always remember your kindness when we went thru a rough and bumpy time in 06!

I wish the very best for your D. I'm sorry that I don't know for sure, but isn't she going thru auditions this year?? NYC unifieds??
