Theater/Drama Colleges "Part 9"

AADA's reputation is generally better than AMDA, but some people think they are both crummy, others like them. It all depends on your drive. If you go to either of these schools you will probably be around some not-quite-as-talented people, but as long as you got what it takes you can do fine...some amazing screen actors have gone to these two schools, so obviously they can accomadate!

Pedrao,
Here are some other New York schools with two-year and shorter courses that could be good if you want to do TV and Film …

Stella Adler Studio of Acting
Atlantic Acting School
Neighborhood Playhouse
Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute

I see you’re visiting NYC tomorrow. That's great, but you might want to consider looking in Los Angeles. That’s where most of the action is for what you want to do and there’s supposedly a lot more work if you have symmetrical, camera friendly features and manifest an easily defined “type” at first glance. The weather is nicer, too. :)

I would like to thank you guys for helping me ...Tomorrow i'm going to the big apple!!!And starting monday i will be visiting those schools..Once again thank you and if you know any more schools let me know...

Just a note on the tech theatre program at Florida State University :-)
We have decided not to offer a BFA degree, but the tech department is vibrantly alive and well. We have not changed the courses we offer at all, and our technically focused students find themselves with many course offerings to choose from and plenty of challenge. We find that our tech students are much better served by the flexibility that is built into the BA program. They are able to choose courses that will help them build their portfolio to meet their individual professional goals. As always, please feel free to contact me with questions!

Ok guys after 3 days in NYC here is my feedback on the schools i 've visited:
Acting for film/tv schools( that's what i wanted):
NYFA: +- i found it too commercial.
AMDA : my favorite 2 years conservatory ...you can do 1 year in NYC and the other in Los Angeles that's great
Stella Adler Studio of Acting: Not totaly dovoted to film/tv but they have "EVENING INTRO PROGRAM" i liked it i lot , good for trainning(I need some trainning to audition for AMDA)
Atlantic Acting School: i didn't like their 2 year program too much focus on theatre. but they have some nice part time programs.
Theatre schools( Nope)
AADA
Neighborhood Playhouse
I haven't visited Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute.. but i check on their website and looks like they have acting for film/tv programs

AMDA sounds great for you, you could ease your way into LA that way!

Yeap!!but i'm not too sure i want to leave NYC!!!Men what a city!!!!!I visited Hunter college today.. i really liked it if the acting does not work for me i may apply there. Everybody talks about how expensive NYC is but i didn't find it very expensive compared to other big cities that i have visited(Toronto, Chicago, London UK, San Francisco) i think you just need to know where to go and avoid the tourist traps ...I have another question for you guys i was talking to this student and he was talking about a major related to Radio , tv and film but i didn't quite understand what he said( his english was worse then mine) i belive it's related to communication i don't know do you guys have any idea of what that might be ?I've also visted NYU tisch uauuu!! very impressive faculty , nice facilities , but you know too much shakespeare for me, 4 years and 40.000$a year (for international students) hahaha !!

Here is some advice from British director Simon Dunmore on auditioning. http://www.simon.dunmore.btinternet.co.uk/ Click on the link on the left for "Advice on auditioning for drama school." It is specifically for British drama schools but I think most of it applies to US drama and MT schools as well. Also make sure you look at the link on the left for his list of "Playwright's Worth Exploring for Audition Material."

i don't pretend to study 3,4 years in a BA or BFA drama/theater degree i just wanna some trainning to be able to audition.

Pedrao,

With all due respects, we certainly wish you the very best in your career pursuits. And I admire your tenacity in going to New York City and seeking out further training. I hope you were able to get some good advice.

I think what you're looking for, however, falls beyond the realm of this website. Most of the posters here are young people, fresh out of high school or maybe college students, or their parents. They're seeking advice on being a theatre major in college. Getting a legitimate degree, as opposed to a certificate obtained from some shake-and-bake six-week program. A lot of us are facing the four-year, $40,000-per-year dilemma that you saw at NYU.

I'm not trying to speak for everybody, of course. I hope you find the right place to get the training you want. I apologize if we weren't as helpful as you might have wanted, but that's the reason.

To the rest of you, can we please resume our college theatre discussion? I think we may have gotten sidetracked a bit trying to help Pedrao. :)

Hello.. I'm really sorry if i spoiled your theater thread ...All of your comments were very very helpful for me...Thank you

Well put, I agree.

Other than Juilliard what are other great theatre conservatories? It looks like Boston Conservatory only as an MT BFA. After spending the summer at CMU my d is more determined than ever to do a straight intensive drama BFA program. Does the New School have one or is it just a masters?

The best thing you could do IMO is go read all 9 chapters of this forum. It will answer that and many other questions.

I have read everything. I think what I am asking for is the list of not only conservatories but also conservatory programs within a larger university, all BFAs

If you had read everything, you wouldnt be asking the question. Both Fishbowlfreshman and Thesbohemian and others have answered that and more in detail.

You may have read everything in the particular part of the thread, but go back to the begining and there is a link to older threads (1-8). After you read that come back here with any questions as Im sure lots of us will be willing to discuss them!! I know I will...summer is boring.

Yes...the New School is just masters...ah, it hurts just to type it.

There seems to have been some misinformation given about the cut situation at DePaul in an earlier section of the thread. The real situation was spelled out on the MT forum here and here.

My son's first choice is Tisch & his second is Juilliard, but we're really trying to narrow down to possible and affordable. Both Purchase and Rutgers are state colleges and are much less expensive. Can someone please give me feedback about these two programs?

My S would love to do musical theatre, but is also happy acting if he can't. He is awesome in Shakesperian roles - has a deep resonant voice - and loves Shakespeare. I saw that Rutgers has a third year in London. Does anyone know more about Rutgers, its program reputation, etc. (more specific than 'it's been growing a lot these past few years)?

About Purchase--I heard it was depressing, I think because of the campus and out of the way location (30 minutes from Manhattan, but still in a small town). What about the program itself?

My son's SATs were 1520, and he is in the top 5% of his class, taking all AP courses. Any other colleges that might offer him scholarships based on his academics?

Many thanks!

D

An

I would give you the same advice as was given Travellinghopefully above. In the short run got to the top of this page, click on “search this thread” and type in Rutgers and see if that does not answer your question
