Theater Major/ School?

My daughter is a hs junior and is trying to come up with a preliminary list of possible schools. She is interested in theater production/ make up. This is a completely new area for me and I have no idea where to point her....any suggestions? We live in the Northeast but is open to other areas of the country....she does want a large school/campus close to or in a city. Thanks!

This is a smaller school, but Muhlenberg's program is ranked top 10 in the nation, and is close to both NYC and Philly

Muhlenberg College Department of Theatre and Dance | Home

Mason Gross School of the Arts

Part of Rutgers, in New Brunswick, NJ

Some others to possibly check into are Syracuse, Boston University and University of Central Florida.

I believe that Northwestern University & NYU (New York University) are the top two theatre undergraduate schools in the country. Try to enroll your daughter in a summer program at Northwestern or any other school with a theatre major to get acquainted with the school & the programs.
P.S. Northwestern University's theatre major & NYU's Tisch School are highly selective programs.

Carnegie Mellon and NYU are both excellent, but very selective.
Columbia College in Chicago should be pretty easy to get into.

Did you know there is a Musical Theatre forum here on cc? While that is different from your d's intended major, it's obviously closely related and there may be threads there of use to you. There will certainly be knowledgeable posters there.

I'm pretty sure there have been other threads here, as well, regarding majors in the technical aspects of Theatre. You should do a search, going back at least a year or so, for threads with "theatre" in the title.

SUNY Purchase has one of the best theatre training programs in the country and is a 20 minute train ride to the heart of Manhattan. It's a very selective program for admission with a demanding workload, taught by some of the most respected working professionals in theatre design/production. Since it is a Conservatory program, roughly 95% of the classes are related to the major for a BFA requirement. For some, a conservatory works. For others wanting a more balanced education with more liberal arts classes, a conservatory may not be suitable. The Conservatory of Theatre & Film at Purchase has a national reputation and excellent track record for grads working in their chosen field. Many are employed on Broadway, National and Regional theatre, Television and Film. However, this program is EXTREMELY demanding and INTENSELY focused AND not for everyone. Purchase is a small college with less than 5000 total enrollment. The bottom line is it is certainly worth researching and should be on a list of choices for a serious design/tech student, especially in the Northeast.

Under the Arts Majors forum, there is whole thread dedicated to theatre/drama colleges.

What kind of theater? Shakespeare? Musical theater? "Modern" drama? Acting? Directing?

Those answers matter.

dmd77....I think if you read my original post you will see I said producing and or make up.

On the west coast, some to consider are UCLA and Chapman in southern California and San Francisco State in the north.

Wright State U in Dayton has an excellent theater department.

I would recommend that you move this query to the Arts major forum. All the theater people are over there.

NotMamaRose......thank you so much. how exactly do you move a post? I am fairly new here and am not sure how to do it. Thank you.

Just click here & you'll see the whole arts sub menu.
