Theater Minor

Hi, I posted this under the Ithaca mt thread but I thought I might find more responses out here.

Hey everyone. I was wondering what anyone here knew about minoring in theater at Ithaca. I didn't get in to any musical theater programs yet. I have one to hear from and one BFA acting to hear from too, but I don't have high hopes for either, so I'm exploring my alternatives, one of which is going to Ithaca, where I was accepted for English even though I was not accepted in to the musical theater program, and minoring in theater/getting private voice lessons and taking dance classes locally. I've emailed the theater department to ask them about the minor. It appears, from the wording on the website, that anyone can declare theater as a minor without an audition and it's not a ton of credits, but at least you leave with something that shows you did take theater courses. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance :)

I never declared a Theatre Minor here at Ithaca, but I DID think about it. So I don't really know about the credit requirements/classes/etc.

In terms of taking outside dance classes, I don't really know how much opportunity for that there is in Ithaca. Here at IC there are (obviously) dance classes for the MTs, but since you would have a declared major, you may not be able to get into them. The only reason I was able to get into my Ballet class with the MTs is becasue I'm an exploratory major, which means I get to register second (only the honors kids go before us). If I had had a major, there is no way I would have gotten in.

Also, with voice lessons, you'll have to audition to get lessons with a grad student in the music school. I've tried everything, and there is really just NO WAY to get into a professor's studio. Their studios are full from all the voice majors/minors/MTs, so getting in when you're not a BFA or a music major/minor is pretty much out of the question.

Auditions for lessons with the grad students are first-come first-served; they don't have enough spaces for everyone who wants lessons. That said, it's not a difficult audition to pass, I think they just want students who have had SOME voice training. My voice teacher at IC was very well-versed in the classical repertoire and I worked with that technique often, but he really didn't know anything about MT, which was frustrating.

You can take Acting I (and maybe II, I'm not sure) as a non-major/minor, and I really like my acting class a lot. My teacher is really kind and helpful and obviously LOVES teaching. I don't even mind getting up at 8:00 am to go to it! hahahaha...you'll understand how early that is next year!!!

I hope that helped a little

That does help. Thanks so much for an inside scoop. I mean it's one thing to see it on a website, but the actual possibility of it can be debateble. Anyway, thanks a lot :)
