Theater opportunities at Elon for non-BFA

My daughter is graduating from a top performing arts high school. She wants to go to a college where she can continue her engagement in theater but is not interested in a conservatory. She really likes Elon, but we have heard that while anyone is allowed to audition for productions, parts are unofficially reserved for BFA students. Does anyone know a BA drama major or a theater lover at Elon who can speak to this?

We only know a BFA there (and she loves the school) but in general, BFA’s are the priority in any school with a BFA program. If she’s not majoring in theatre… if she’s just looking for the opportunity to be involved while she pursues other avenues, it’s probably fine. If she’s pursuing a BA in theatre for acting and hoping for some large roles for her resume, then no, I wouldn’t recommend her attending a school with a BFA program.

She is passionate about theater, so she wants opportunities for parts in productions, but is less interested in “studying” theater since that has been a large part of her high school experience; she wants college to be about exploring all the other things she doesn’t know about. Sounds like Elon will not be for her. That makes the choice between Brandeis and Scripps. They are significantly more expensive but I think she will feel stifled at Elon with a lack of access to significant roles in their theater productions. Thanks for your help.

I encourage you to post this on the theatre majors board too. Might be some additional info on Elon. For what it’s worth, my D is the same. Loves theatre. It’s been her life since she was very little. However, she wants to take the time in college to explore her many academic interests. Like your D, it’s not so easy to just “turn it off” when it comes to theatre and the community you grew up in. She wants to be part of it and if she decides to double major, she wants to know she has a real place in their department. She’s chosen a school with no BFA.

I do know that Pomona is the only school in the Claremont consortium with a theatre department (which of course, is accessible to all.) It’s small your D certainly would have plenty of opportunity to be involved in the program as heavily or as little as she wants. Kids can also do their work study in the theatre department. Then again, it’s a whole lot more than Elon may not be worth it.

Thanks, that’s helpful. Where does your D go to college?

I can’t figure out how to post on the theater majors board . . . is it easy to direct me?
