Theater programs

My S is trying to compare the theater program at these colleges. Interested in comparing quality of theater classes, productions and student theater groups. Planning to major in theater, but also double major in another subject so info on flexibility to double major would also be helpful.

Skidmore
Oberlin
Kenyon
Connecticut College
Reed
Denison
Whitman College

Skidmore, Connecticut College, Kenyon and Whitman might represent the schools strongest for theatre from this group, especially if considered partly by geographical distribution.

My daughter has taken a few theater classes at Kenyon and has participated in some productions. The quality of the program seems pretty high. It’s quite competitive to get roles in theater productions but there are many options. She’s double majoring in two different subjects (not theater) but has a friend who majors in theater and another discipline, so it’s possible.

This is really helpful information!

thx!

I’m glad! Feel free to pm me if you have any questions.

When we toured Skidmore last summer, it was notable that many students we met introduced themselves as having a double major. Like: chemistry and theater, or biology and French, or political science and anthropology. There were some interesting combinations! Most students seemed really into learning for learning’s sake (even if they might not use both of their majors in their future careers).

Skidmore’s theater scene seems strong, and there are a few student-run troupes that put on occasional shows, in addition to the productions by the actual theater department. So students have theater opportunities even if they aren’t majoring or minoring in theater.

I’m not as familar with the theater scenes at the other schools on your list, but they’re all excellent LACs with a variety of great academics. Good luck to your daughter!

What focus? e.g. acting, directing, stage managing, writing, tech, etc?

(sorry: son, not daughter!)

My S would focus on acting.

I read a facebook post that the Caberet group is now the Theatrebreds, but it sounded like they were struggling as a group. Do you have any more info on theatre groups at Skidmore? The Cabaret group used to do student run musicals which my S would likely want to particiapte in, but not sure student run musicals are still occuring.

Hi – my earlier comment was based on info the tour guide gave us last summer. He was a junior who said, “Yeah, some of my friends do theater outside of the classes.” But exactly how extensive this is – with the Theaterbreds group or others – I’m not sure. My potential-Skidmore student is also interested in theater but won’t major in it, so he’ll look into this too.
