how's the theater program at pomona? i'm looking at scripps, but i know you can major through pomona's dept. i've heard mixed things from people who actually go to the claremonts, while people around me (NYC) have told me its a great department. im choosing between this and skidmore which is known to be really good, but its SO cold there. what do you guys think?

There have been a few fairly recent threads on this topic. I can't do the search right now, but I'll repost if I come across anything in the near future. Just FYI, though, dig around :)

I can't speak as a student, but I enjoyed many productions in Claremont! And like you, I also heard mixed reviews...some wonderful, some "fine." I don't think I ran across any major negativity. I seem to recall something from a recent-ish thread about the faculty having very, very theoretical teaching styles, maybe? Check out the department website. I'd also recommend looking up the theatre faculty on www.ratemyprofessors.com. You might find some helpful comments.

Good luck!

I think I responded to your Scripps post about theater awhile ago, but if you have any other questions, PM me.

The department is quite good but it depends on what you are looking for.
Many of hte faculty have studied in different countries, including France, Japan, and India, and Asian theatre is an important aspect of the curriculum.

If you're looking for a dept. that will do two Neil Simons and a musical each year, then this is not your department. If you're looking for a dept. where you can study mime, kabuki, and Indian dance with incredible experts, it's a great department. There are also, of course, more traditional courses in acting, directing, design, production, etc. If you have specific questions, I can probably answer them, so ask away.

Ha! Neil Simon's daughter Ellen attended Pomona College. Maybe this is why?
