Theater

Can someone please comment on theater at Princeton? Is it something kids like to do and support? My son is interested in communications, theatre, directing...something creative. We are not sure if Princeton is a good fit but someone told us it was strong and we should consider it. What about acapella groups and singing things. Thanks

For commentary on the theatrical scene at Princeton, see this thread: <a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=48845%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=48845</a> and <a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=58466%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=58466</a>. I'll (hopefully) be doing theatre at Princeton, and I'm really excited about all the different opportunities it offers (least of which is the opportunity to work with one of the best regional theatres in the nation, the McCarter Theatre). Hope that helps! :)

Thanks for the info. So there is no major in it? Is there something close to it? My S doesnt know if he wants a career in it so he prob wont apply BFA to MT programs. but he wants to do something creative-advertising, directing etc. His GPA, SATs, ECs are good so we are considering IVYs for the generally great education but what can you major in at Princeton that would alllow you to learn, study something that incorporates singing, directing, dancing, acting or just being creative or is it only at the club level? Thanks.

He can get a certificate in the Program in Theatre (which is equivalent to a minor), but there's no major (sadly). They're looking to expand the program though, so that could change in the coming years. There's a nice crop of courses offered through the program, so he'd have opportunities to get into the classes (many of which do admissions based upon interview or creative sample). However, there are so many opportunities to get involved in theatre outside of the classroom that you could pretty much devote just as much time if not more to theatre in that way as if he were in a theatre concentration/major itself.

princeton performing arts groups:

well, david duchovny is a princeton alum, if that helps...

...as are roger berlind, dean cain, ethan coen, mel ferrer, joshua logan, brooke shields, and jimmy stewart, among others.

Just to add on to previous comments, although you can't major in theater, in addition to all the EC theater stuff (of which there is a ton) you can also major in English or comparative literature and do a "creative thesis." If you plan carefully, it can look an awful lot like a theater major that includes some very solid reading of great literature. Something that would interest your s is that students often direct their own theatrical productions. Theater and dance are very popular on campus and play to sellout audiences.
