Theatre advice and auditions!

Hi everyone!

I'm currently a second-semester sophomore in college pursuing a Bachelor of Arts. I was involved in a "theater" program (called Destination Imagination, or DI) since I was young, but the term "theater" is used very loosely. It was more utilized to teach teamwork and creatively solve a given problem. In March (after working since October), we presented our "solution" in an eight-minute skit complete with scenery, props, and costumes -- all completed by the team members with any outside assistance. This program, while extremely useful for life skills, was not based on acting or putting on a performance. It was more the creativity used by the team.

That being said, I have always LOVED performing. My absolute favorite part about participating in DI was performing our skit. Unfortunately, since it was so time consuming, I have never been able to act in an actual theater production. This semester at college, I'm taking an acting course (my first ever) and absolutely fell in love with it.

I want to act in a play this summer (I auditioned for my school's spring production but unfortunately was not cast), but don't really know where to turn. I've tried researching some community theaters near me with no luck. I also fear that since I'm older (I'm 21), my chances of being cast are slim because at this point, a lot of people have much more acting experience under their belts.

Also... I know that this is the Musical Theater forum, but I cannot sing (or dance). I thought that this forum would be able to offer me the best advice, which is why I posted here even though I clearly could not be in a musical show.

I apologize for the lengthiness of this post. Does anyone have any advice to offer? Thank you so much in advance! :]

Well don't say you can't sing or dance. Dance, especially is something that ANYONE can do with some training. As for singing, if you can hold a tune well then you can have great potential. Of course, none of us here have ever heard you sing, so we can't judge that, but if you're really passionate about this I'd look into getting voice lessons and taking dancing classes. In the mean time, read up on theater stuff. Get to know some plays and compile a list of monologues and songs that you could use at auditions.

Good luck!

Alyx86 - I think from your post that you are not necessarily looking to audition for musical theatre productions.

I am not sure where you will be spending the summer, but in any region in the US there are summer shows you can audition for. Are you looking for Shakespeare type productions? Comedies? Do a search for theatre in your area, and you will likely come up with tons of information.

There may also be a regional organization in your area that maintains a database of all upcoming auditions. Some educational programs also put on short plays as a culmination of integrated acting training. As you can see there are a lot of options.

Good luck!

You might also want to look for a college or theater in your area which offers a summer acting program. Often an acting workshop will culminate in a performance of some sort.
