I am planning on applying to some audition admit school, for a BFA in musical theatre, and some non-audition, for a BA in musical theatre. I need help looking at school that have good double majoring programs for BA in theatre and BS in computer science. Please help, and let me know which schools are good for these majors/ programs.
thanks!!!
Most schools aren’t going to have any formal programs to double major in those two fields. You simply need to look for schools that have a major in both and that make it relatively easy to double major.
It’s kind of a long shot, but CMU sounds exactly like what you’re looking for. They have what is arguably the best CS program in the country, along with a top theatre program (ranked #6 by US News, and with 41 Tony Awards). They offer double majors, as well as “BxA” program, so you have the option of combining your majors and getting one intercollege degree as well.
You will need to look at each college that offers both programs and see if you can construct a four year schedule that include the major requirements for both majors and the college’s non-overlapping general education requirements without excessive overloading. Colleges with a non-engineering-based CS major are more likely to be doable, since they are less likely to have the extra non-CS science and math requirements that engineering-based CS majors tend to have.
Be aware that CS courses with programming assignments and projects and performing arts courses can be higher than normal workload courses, so overloading the schedule can result in a very heavy workload.
If not doable (or you are not admitted to or cannot afford the colleges where this combination is doable), consider doing one major and taking out-of-major courses of interest in the other.
You won’t be able to double major with the BFA unless you do more than 4 years. BA Theatre will give you more options. The challenge will be the BS in CS because those will take a lot of work.
As for schools, my D is at Northern Kentucky University getting a BA in theatre and focusing her courses on MT. So they have that. They also offer a BS CS. You would need to check with them to see if doing both is feasible.
