I am interested in the theatre department in Williams. Anyone else here interested in being involved in productions?

Are their any theatre majors out there??????

SP135, It's winter break at Williams and there aren't too many kids on campus. My son is not involved in theater but several of his friends who are not theater majors have performed on campus. There are quite few opportunities for kids to act or get involved back-stage in major and informal productions.

Academically, theater is a small, but vibrant and well funded department. The college just spent $40 million on a splendid state-of-the-art performing arts complex. If you have any doubt that they are serious about supporting theater, visit and take a tour!

Actors and technicals are always cited as admissions pluses, which indicates that Williams needs and wants kids who will contribute to the campus theater community.

Williamstown also has one of the best summer-stock theater companies. It's not directly related to the college, but the energy emanates.

Keep your eye on this link to the Williams Alumni Review magazine. The online version trails the tree version by several weeks, and it's not yet available. The cover story of the January edition is an extensive article on the Summer Theatre Lab program in the '62 Center for Theatre and Dance mentioned by Momrath. The teaser for the article:

At the '62 Center's new Summer Theatre Lab, students hone their craft alongside talented alumni professionals who get to flex their own creative muscles.

How about musical theater? Is Williams seeking applicants involved in this particular version of theater?

As strange as it is, Williams really doesn't have a musical theater scene. I know that the Cap and Bells group on campus put on a lot of student-run/directed performances each year, as does the theater department. But during my year and a half here, so far I've seen no musical theater performances. Don't let that burst your bubble too much, though...we do have a very active music culture here. If you're interested in singing with a group, we have a large concert choir, a more selective chamber choir, and far more acapella groups than a student body of roughly 2000 should have.

I hear there is a movement on campus to start doing musicals. I know the theatre department is compact enough so that if you have any suggestions, the theatre department considers them seriously. My friend, who is a theatre major, tells me the department wants to keep its majors happy, so the professors will go out of their way to help students. Apart from Cap and Bells, which is entirely student run, I know there was a class for Winter Study on American Musicals, and for their final projects, each person performed a song from a Broadway show, and the class put on West Side Story. There are certain many possibilities to act and sing around campus so that you do not need to worry. Also, there is a new Williams run theatre lab during summers, which actually sounds pretty cool. I am sure you can more information on Williams' website, somewhere. There have been posters all over the place.

Can anyone tell me what's the main difference between a theatre major and a film major (Williams doesnt offer one)?

The link I mentioned in #4 is now up.

Cap and Bells (the Williams student theatre organization--which happens to be extremely active) is the oldest student theatre organization in the country. Additionally, Steven Sondheim is a Williams alumn (and I believe acted in a play alongside his classmate, George Steinbrenner--someone else may correct me here).

I've heard that there was a Cap and Bells tradition of doing a Sondheim musical every year or two, and while I think it's been a couple of years since the last one, I think Cap and Bells is doing Assasins this year. I've heard rumours that they may do Into the Woods next year.

As others on the board have said, Williams just completed a new amazing theatre complex. It's a good time to be a theatre major at Williams.
