Does anyone know anything about Bard’s theatre program and productions? My junior D and I are going to be visiting schools in that area in April, and many people keep saying she should see Bard. The theatre program is obviously engaged and good, but my concern is that it might be too edgy/quirky for my girl, who loves a big, bold musical. Is Bard’s theatre department too cool to put on mainstream musicals?

My guess is that it wouldn’t be the right place for your daughter. Even if a school’s theater department doesn’t put on musicals, I would look for a school that has at least a student group putting on musicals. I don’t think that Bard has that, but I’m not positive. Even though my D is a theater nut, I didn’t think Bard was the right place for her. It also feels pretty isolated (although NYC is a train ride away). My D actually likes quirky, but in terms of theater she is more of a traditionalist.

Don’t take my word as gospel, though, since we’re just prospies ourselves!

Thanks Don… that seems to be my gut feeling, too. We will be touring Vassar and SUNY New Paltz, so it’s more or less the same neighborhood-- maybe we’ll just do a quick Bart tour and not get as in-depth.

I believe there is an active student run musical theater group. Last spring when visiting there were posters for Sweeney Todd all over the place. There was also an earlier thread about this issue - if you search it should pop up.
