My Son is a current freshman who is also contemplating double concentrating in theater and "business". While he has only completed one semester and I dont feel I know a whole lot, I can tell you that Brown has a respectable program. He took the first theater course and really enjoyed it. He had to tech a show (part of the requirement) and felt the calibre of the actors was astounding. In addition Brown has an arrangement with the Trinity Repertory, a professional theater group and I believe there are avenues for acting, directing, teching etc. with them. Each semester there are dramas and musicals put on. In fact, my son was just cast in Merrily We Roll Along, which will be directed by a Trinity director. There are also numerous activities that promote theater-many a capella groups (16, I think), student directed shows, student written shows. etc They are well attended events. Brown also boasts some famous theater alumni. It is a great place for those who chose to study theater while also pursuing other avenues of study. Good luck. If you have any specific questions, please post and I may be able to get the answer for you or perhaps a theater student can add some further info.

what's the best theater club at Brown?

Wow, thank you, Audi! Very helpful stuff. Is your son an actor or a techie? Or perhaps a singer or dancer? Maybe a triple threat? Haha...has he liked rehersals so far?

Anyone else who can share their knowledge would be loved! Maybe someone who is involved in theatre?

I do know that the Literary Arts Department has many students who write theater pieces that are performed occasionally on campus. There is a yearly even, the name is escaping me but it's something like, "The Squares and a Chair", and those are the only props you get (the squares are like... 3x3x3 foot cubes) and you have to write a 15min play for those items and you can have the piece performed...

Whoa. That's really cool. Haha.

Anyone else?

Thanks for the info!

modestmelody-- you are referring to three chairs, two cubes.

there are several main theatre groups on campus:

musical forum (mf), which puts on fully student-produced and and -acted shows for which performance rights must be obtained. This semester MF did Assassins by Sondheim.

production workshop (pw), which puts on fully student-run plays. they also do three chairs two cubes if i'm not mistaken.

brownbrokers, which puts on student-written musicals.

mainstage (aka sock and buskin), which does professionally-produced, student-acted musicals. this is the group that is producing merrily we roll along in the spring.

there are also other, minor groups, including bop (brown opera productions) and bugs (brown university gilbert and sullivan).

hope this helps!

That DOES help! Thanks, Josiah. Have you, by any chance, been involved with theatre at Brown? Or even seen any shows? What are you're impressions of it?

Gah Brown sounds too good to be true :-P
