So, I'm a drama nerd, but not majoring in it.

Is it possible for me to still be very involved in NU's theatre department? Can I minor in it? And if I don't, can I still be involved with the shows and such?

Thank you!

Thank you!

yes, possible, but you might be met with some amount of pretention and/or discrimination in some instances if you are not a "theatre major"

Oh.....then I definately have to rethink this whole Northwestern thing, because theatre is my life. It just can't be my life forever.

That's unfortunate. Thanks for the info.

np, might want to talk to someone actually IN the theatre department, as this is just sort of the impression i've gotten through casual conversation here

Haha yeah, unfortunately I don't really know anyone from the theatre department. But, you know, casual convo is often a good indicator of the real deal, at least in my experience.

Thanks again.

You'll have tough competition, because there are a lot of very serious theatre majors here, but other than that you absolutely can be involved with shows! I've never seen any instances of the discrimination that els refered to. There are MANY non theatre majors involved in shows.
There isn't a theatre minor though.

what i was talking about was more specifically based off the music department and only partially off theatre, but i was kind of extrapolating and thinking theatre would be the same, since they're both so highly regarded

Haha alright, differing opinions are always good :-)

Thanks Crypticism...are you involved with theatre here?

I'm a theatre major, but I'm not particularly involved, although I have friends who are. Including people who aren't theatre majors.

If you have any other questions about theatre (or absolutely anything else) feel free to pm me. I'm also a psych major, fyi.

Thank you very much, cryptic! I'll keep that offer of help in mind :-)

there is a theatre minor...i am one! it started this year.

Hey there! I'm a very involved theatre major, and I would be happy to answer your question: YES, you can be very involved in theatre here on campus. There is a huge, thriving student theatre community that is open to all majors here. Non-majors can even audition for mainstage shows. However, some things to keep in mind:

1.) There is alot of competition for acting roles and many many talented people here. It may be very difficult to get cast at first, as it would be anywhere.

2.) There is a sort of bias against non-theatre majors, but ONLY in the sense that all the theatre majors have acting classes and such (more experience) and as a result spend a great deal of time with each other (more political connections).

However, do not let this discourage you at all...I'm currently stage managing a show with a Pre-Med and an Undecided major in the cast, and we love having other perspectives in the process.

Also, technical theatre buffs are always in very high demand here, so if you're also interested in stage managing, set designing, costume designing, lighting designing, etc, you will ALWAYS be busy! You could also consider, if accepted, living in the Jones performing arts dorm, as this might give you the connections it would be harder to make as a non-major.

So yes, it's competitive, but if you're interested, your lack of a theatre major shouldn't really hold you back here simply on principal. If you're involved and connected, you have a plenty good chance.

And feel free to PM me with any questions! I've sold my soul to student theatre (acting, SMing, designing, producing, etc.), so hopefully I've gotten some knowledge out of it.

Wow, thank you SO much!! That makes me really, incredibly happy, as I wouldn't give up theatre for the world.

my son is currently a theatre major at nu and a jones resident, and although i'm no expert, everything rocketpixy says rings true.

edmondsg, does your son like it there? And does he like living in jones?

Is it possible to be in more than one show at a time or does time just not allow that?

Whoa more than one show at a time? Wouldn't that suck the life out of you no matter where you went? Haha.

Just curious because when I was there at Discover NU some kid said he got called back for 8 shows and I was just curous how that worked in terms of which one(s) he did.

Aah gotcha. "Wow" is all I can say about that kid :-P
