Can anyone tell me about the theatre department at IU?

While the business school (Kelley) gets all the press and threads here on collegeconfidential, IU-B's music/theatre school, journalism school, foreign language, and public administration schools are probably the highest ranked programs at the university. Of these, the music/theatre school is probably the best known of all of them.

P.S. Out of all the programs in the country, name the one that has placed the most individuals into the New York's Metropolitan Opera program during the past 10 years--that would be Indiana University at Bloomington (even more than Julliard).

Correction - the Theater Dept is not part of the Jacobs School of Music; however it does have a good reputation and is right next door. There is a new musical theater major as well as the traditional one.

Lakeeffect--thanks for the correction--I thought the two majors were under the same department--not separate as is actually the case.

I love Calcruzer's super knoweldge! <3

Ha, Ha, Ha--okay, I got "owned" on this one--I'll admit it.

That's okay. It's a little confusing, just like the Journalism School, Telecommunications and Communications and Culture departments are completely separate; likewise the Ballet Major is in the School of Music, Modern Dance is in HPER.

The theatre dept is excellent. There are many opportunities to audition for mainstage as well as student directed shows. My daughter is a musical theatre major (BFA) and takes her acting classes with theatre majors. You should check out the acting and musical theatre threads on CC for more information.

My D is a BA Theatre Major freshman. She takes voice through Jacob's and dance through other departments. She has been totally pleased with the quality of the education and certain she picked the right school for her major. The opportunities for performance as compared with other schools truly are amazing.

Thanks, everyone! This is really helpful. I'm applying as a transfer and I don't know when I'll be able to visit, so I'll take all the opinions I can get :).
